Abstract

1,003,612. Stencils; printing surfaces. GESTETNER Ltd. April 2, 1964 [April 29, 1963], No. 16835/63. Heading B6C. A stencil blank, adapted to be cut electrically but which may also be cut mechanically, comprises a backing sheet having attached thereto a paper stencil sheet not greater than 0À00125 of an inch in thickness, of low porosity, and loaded with from 5-30% by weight of carbon black, said stencil sheet being coated on the side adjacent the backing sheet with a layer of conductivity from 4 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> - 2 Î 10<SP>-4</SP> mhos and on the opposite side with a layer of conductivity 6 Î 10<SP>-6</SP> - 5 Î 10<SP>-6</SP> mhos. The porosity of the stencil sheet (determined by the Gurley-Hill SPS method) is greater than 250 and is preferably 1500. The said sheet may be wet-strengthened with a synthetic resin such as a urea- and melamine-formaldehyde resin or a polyamide modified with an epihalohydrin. The conductive coatings are preferably layers of polyvinyl chloride having carbon black dispersed therein, and the combined thickness of the layers may be 0À0005 of an inch. The stencil blank may be provided with a white or grey top coat. Printing surfaces.-A hydrophilic unimaged printing plate may be used as a backing sheet or placed between the stencil sheet and the backing sheet so that when the stencil is cut, oleophilic material is transferred to the surface of the plate to form a lithographic printing plate.
