Abstract
1,003,428. Folding screens. M. C. VOISINE. Jan. 15, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1962; March 10, 1962; April 12, 1962], No. 1723/63. Heading A4U. A folding screen comprises rigid rectangular main panels, such as 1a, 2b, 7a (Figs. 1, 5) hinged together as at 12 along their longer sides and rigidly attached to hinged connecting pieces, such as auxiliary panels 2a, 1b 8a or arms 102a, 101b 108a (Fig. 11), disposed substantially in the planes of the main panels, the latter and the connecting pieces together providing a form of lazy tongs whereby the screen may be folded with its main panels laid substantially flat against each other, the axis of the hinge 17 joining adjacent diamonds of the lazy tongs being located adjacent the outer surface of the connecting piece and the axes of the hinges, such as 12 and 16, at the other corners of the diamond being located adjacent the inner faces of the main panels and connecting pieces respectively. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 5) wooden main panels 1a, 2b etc. are rigidly secured to auxiliary panels 1b, 2a etc. by strips 3, 4 extending through openings 23, 26 in the auxiliary panels 1b, 2a, the axes of the hinges such as 11, 17, 16 being located in a common plane. End panels 5, 6 are connected by a hinge 28 and a bent strip 29. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 15), alternate main panels 202b are integral with associated auxiliary panels 202a and a strip 203 extending through an opening 223 in the combined panel 202 secures the main panel 201a to an auxiliary panel 201b. In another embodiment (Fig. 11) wooden main panels 101a, 102b, 107a are associated with connecting pieces in the form of metal arms 102a, 101b, 108a provided with extensions 104, 103 for securing to the main panels. In a further embodiment (Fig. 7), main panels 1<SP>1</SP>a, 2<SP>1</SP>b and auxiliary panels 1<SP>1</SP>b, 2<SP>1</SP>a having reinforcing ribs 1<SP>1</SP>c, 1<SP>1</SP>b etc. are of metal and are secured together by strips 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>, having arcuate portions such as 3<SP>1</SP>q, extending through openings in the auxiliary panels. Alternatively (Fig. 14), the metal main panels 101<SP>1</SP>q etc. are associated with connecting pieces in the form of arms 101<SP>1</SP>b, 102<SP>1</SP>q etc. having extensions 103<SP>1</SP>, 104<SP>1</SP>.
