Abstract

1,003,237. Moulding reinforced articles. G. H. BAKER, M. H. BAKER, and R. G. BAKER. April 28, 1964 [April 30, 1963], No. 17044/63. Heading B5A. A reinforced article, e.g. a chair frame, wall panel &c., is formed by expanding beads of plastics material, e.g. polystyrene or polyvinylchloride, in a multi-part mould, the reinforcement being secured by suction, pins, hooks or clips &c. against the mould wall. The reinforcements may comprise pieces, strips or sheets of woven textiles, e.g. hessian or plastics materials, metal, metal foil, glass fibre cloth, leather, sheet rubber, felt, expanded metal sheet, metal gauge, or wire netting. Additional rigid reinforcements, comprising pads to which nails &c. may be anchored in the case of a chair frame, or a door or window frame in the case of a wall panel, may be used, said reinforcements being composed of metal, plastics, or bonded fibrous material &c. In the embodiment shown in the drawings a chair frame is moulded between co-operating mould halves 1 and 2, the mould half 2 being furnished with pins 11 over which is impaled and positioned the reinforcing sheet 12. The beads are introduced through aperture 13, and the steam or hot air needed to perform the expansion through apertures 14. The reinforcements may be coated with a suitable adhesive to ensure adherence with the expanded material.
