Abstract

1,002,830. Indicating-apparatus. STANLEY SEALEY INSTRUMENTS Ltd. Jan. 23, 1964 [Oct. 29, 1962], No. 40862/62. Heading G1J. An indicating-instrument has attached to its cover glass a sensing device comprising a photoelectric cell 14 exposed to light reflected from a source 17 by the instrument dial, the cell and source being so located that a change in the illumination of the cell occurs when the indicating pointer reaches or leaves a predetermined position, precautions being taken to avoid interference by changes in the ambient illuminition required for the visual observation of the instrument. This can be done by providing a source 17 of light which can be modulated at a convenient frequency and by including a corresponding filter or tuned amplifier in the output circuit of the cell 14. A suitable source 17 would be a small filament lamp fed with alternating current of low enough frequency to cause a marked ripple or a neon lamp. An alternative is to provide two photo-electric cells connected to produce a balanced condition, both cells being exposed to the ambient light, but at least one also being exposed to light reflected from the dial so that when the pointer approaches or departs from the predetermined position the balance is disturbed. One cell may face towards and the other away from the dial or both may face the dial and a low-frequency filter or tuned amplifier may be included in their output circuit. A cylindrical lens 13 may be provided to concentrate light from the lamp 17 on the dial and reflected light from the dial on the cell or cells. The casing 11 may be of polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinylchloride or epoxy resin and it may have a metal casing to screen it from electrical interference, the cable 19 being screened by sleeve 18.
