Abstract

Heading F2V A solenoid operated valve comprises a valve actuating plunger 13 of magnetic material slidable in a guide sleeve 8 mounted externally of the solenoid coil 1 on pole pieces 3 and 4 extending laterally from opposite ends of the magnetic core of the coil. The ends of the tube 8 are closed by members 9 and 9a which comprise valve seats 11 and 11a and pipe sockets 12 and 12a. The plunger comprises a valve washer 14, axial bore 18 and radial port 17. A reduced diameter on the plunger provides a clearance for a compression spring 16 and a fluid flow passage. A non-metallic sleeve 19 co-operates with a shoulder 20 on the plunger 13 to define the plunger's limit of travel. In operation, when the coil 1 is energized the valve 14 is held closed, against the action of the spring 16, as the coil is de-energized the plunger 13 is moved by gravity and the spring 16 to open the valve so that fluid can flow past the seat 11, through the clearance housing the spring 16, through the port 17 and bore 18 to the outlet 12a. The operation of the valve may be reversed by inverting the plunger 13 so that the valve washer 14 co-operates with the seat 11a. The valve can be made to operate as a three-way valve by placing valve washers 14 at both ends of the plunger 13 and placing a side port in the wall of the sleeve 8. Instead of constituting the valve element the plunger may control a separate valve element through a mechanical coupling. The bore 18 may be replaced by axial grooves in the sliding surface of the plunger 13 or sleeve 8.
