Abstract
Thermoplastic polymeric materials are made by polymerizing at least two monomeric materials having a reactivity ratio other than one in the presence of one or more rubbery polymers, by heating a solution containing up to 20% by weight of the rubbery polymer in at least a portion of the monomers to cause graft polymerization while subjecting the solution to shearing agitation sufficient to maintain the grafted rubbery polymer suspended in the prepolymer in the form of particles not greater than 10 microns in size, until the prepolymer contains from 20 to 50% by weight of solid, adding any remaining monomer, and then continuing the polymerization by heating and agitating the partially polymerized solution suspended in an inert medium, e.g. water, containing a dispersant. The rubber used is preferably a butadiene polymer, but may also be an acrylate or silicone rubber, an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer, polytetrahydrofuran, polypropylene oxide, an allyl glycidyl ether copolymer or a butylene rubber. Polymerization in the first stage may be effected thermally or by the use of a catalyst such as benzoyl or di-tert.-butyl peroxide. The suspending medium used in the second stage of polymerization is preferably water containing sodium carboxymethyl methylcellulose as a suspending agent. The examples describe polymerization processes in which the monomer mixtures consist of styrene and acrylonitrile; styrene, alpha-methyl styrene and acrylonitrile; styrene and methyl methacrylate; styrene, methyl methacrylate and either acrylonitrile or methacrylic acid; and acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate and o-vinyltoluene, mixed m- and p-vinyl toluenes or p-chlorostyrene, the rubbers used being stereospecific polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile rubbers, and a mixture of polybutadiene and a butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber.
