Abstract
1,002,420. Washing machines. SIEMENSELECTROGERATE A.G. May 15, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 18709/62. Heading D1A. [Also in Division H2] Control apparatus in an automatic washing machine comprises cam-operated switches 6, 7 to control the direction of rotation of the washing motor, a step-by-step actuating mechanism 10 to actuate a programme carrier 28, means 11 &c to prevent said actuation, and a timing switch gear 19-21, 14-16 to limit the duration of said prevention; the cam 4, 5 of the cam-operated switches, the step-by-step actuating mechanism and the timing switch gear all being driven by a common motor 1 running at a constant speed. A ratchet 8 is constantly driven by the motor 1. When a locking pawl 11 is withdrawn by an electromagnet 12, the ratchet 8 rocks a lever 10 against a compression spring 13, the lever 10 having a pawl 29 to advance the control means 28 which may be a cam plate as shown, or a set of cam discs, or a punched card, and may be interchangeable. A toothed wheel 18 and cams 19-21 are fixed on a shaft supported by the lever 10 and when the lever 10 is stationary, the wheel 18 is engaged and rotated by a pinion 17 on the same shaft as the ratchet 8. Following a period of deenergization, the coil of the magnet 12 may be reenergized, either when particular operating conditions have been reached (e.g. a particular water level or temperature), or after a predetermined time by one of the cams 19-21 closing contacts 14, 15 or 16. The pawl 11 is then withdrawn as soon as a tooth of the ratchet 8 presses the lever 10 to relieve the pressure on the pawl 11 produced by the spring 13. Thus only complete steps are performed by the lever 10. As the lever 10 recommences rocking, the wheel 18 is disengaged from the pinion 17 and is rotated back to its initial position by a spring 23. The pinion 17 will not rotate the wheel 18 indefinitely, even when engaged, since the wheel 18 has a recess 22 which the pinion 17 eventually enters. Wear of the last tooth of the wheel 18 by the pinion 17 in this position due to pressure produced by the spring 23 is avoided by having recesses 24 in the cams 19-21 which the contact springs 14-16 engage thereby arresting the wheel 18 to cancel out the action of the spring 23.
