Abstract

1,002,333. Vacuum plant testing. KNAPSACK-GRIESHEIM A.G. Oct. 13, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 36879/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading G1B. A method of testing the atmosphere in industrial vacuum plant comprises continuously withdrawing gas samples by application of a vacuum greater than that in the plant from a plurality of point in the plant or a part of the plant, analysing the samples in known manner, and comparing the analytical results for those points where the plant atmosphere has not reacted with the reactant charge materials to determine whether and where a leak has developed. An additional current of a known quantity of pure scavenging gas may be temporarily introduced into a specific part of apparatus not occupied by the reactants but connected to the reaction zone, and the change in concentration of said scavenging gas measured. The vacuum plant may be thus used for the silicothermal production of magnesium. Specifications 997,422 and 1,002,334 are referred to.
