Abstract

A transfer system comprises a coloured base sheet of paper, a frangible layer of low cohesion composed predominantly of a hard, brittle resinous material on a surface of the base sheet, an "activating" layer which comprises an organic thermoplastic material having affinity for the resinous material and for paper and also a white colouring matter to mark the colour of the base sheet. There may also be a layer of synthetic resin containing a colouring material between the frangible and activating layers. The frangible layer may comprise discrete fine particles of a hard resin or a substantially unplacticized synthetic resin, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate and may also contain small quantities of a butadiene-acrylic copolymer and of polyvinyl alcohol. The activating layer may comprise polyethylene and titanium dioxide. The intermediate layer may comprise polystyrene, ethyl acrylate polymer, polymethyl methacrylate, black pigment and graphite. Copies may be made by superposing that of the coated paper and writing upon the top sheet. The coating layer, where the writing pressure is applied, are completely removed, so that the colour of the base sheet shows through. In addition if there is a pigmented intermediate layer the transferred material forms a legible mark on the copy-receiving sheet.
