Abstract

1,001,874. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 16, 1962 [Aug. 28, 1961], No. 30997/61. Heading G6C. [Also in Division B3] A nuclear fuel element can is formed from at least two layers of material, the inner layer being aluminium of low creep strength, and the outer layer being sintered aluminium powder, both materials having a low neutron absorption cross - section. In the embodiment shown, ceramic fuel slugs 3 are enclosed in an extruded tube 1 comprising an outer layer la of sintered aluminium powder, and an inner layer 1b of wrought aluminium. At each end of the fuel slug assembly there is a ceramic spacer 4 with an aluminium ring 5 shrunk on to its periphery. End caps 7 having the same material section as the tube 1 are flash butt welded to the tube ends. The aluminium ring 5 ensures continuity of the wrought aluminium layer after welding. Vents 6 in the ceramic spacers allow welding gases to escape to the hollow portions of the cap.
