Abstract

1,001,818. Measuring radiation; electrolytic, meters. QUARZLAMPEN G.m.b.H. May 23, 1962 [June 3, 1961], No. 19832/62. Headings G1A and G1Q. A radiation measuring apparatus comprises a photo-electric cell which receives the radiation to be measured and which is electrically connected through a variable resistor to an electrolytic meter at which a measurement proportional to the integral of the incident radiation with respect to time can be read off. In the embodiment shown radiation, such as light, from a source 10 passes through a filter 14 and is received by a silicon photo-emissive cell 16 which is connected through a variable resistor 18 to an electrolytic meter 24 of the mercury type which gives an indication of the total amount of radiation received by the cell during a given time, the scale 38 of the meter 24 being calibrated in either watt-seconds per unit of area or lux hours the range being determined by the setting of the resistor 18. The electrolytic meter 24 has a bulb 26 in which a semipermeable frit plate 28 is arranged at an angle to the horizontal with one of the electrodes 20 of the meter above it and one 22 below it and immersed in the electrolyte 36. An amount of mercury 32 is contained above the frit plate 28 and in electrical contact with the electrode 20. As a result of current produced by the photo-electric cell 16 mercury passes through the frit plate into the vertical measuring tube 34. The meter may be re-set to zero by inverting it and allowing mercury which has collected in the tube 34 to flow back to above the frit plate through an aperture 30. Additional photoelectric cells may be connected in series with the cell 16 to increase the voltage output thereof.
