A packing unit comprises an expandable slice of honeycomb material having a cover member secured thereto, the cover member permitting expansion and holding the material in the expanded state. The cover member, made of cardboard or thick paper, is attached to the first and last constituent strips of the thick paper honeycomb, and is narrower than the width of the honeycomb, so that the transverse contraction of the slice produced by the longitudinal expansion leaves the slice and cover member the same width (Fig. 3, not shown). A plurality of the units may be arranged in a case, the cover members dividing the layers and fruit may be packed therein. In another embodiment (Fig. 7) a slice 51 is adhesively secured to the end wall members 52, 53 of a corrugated cardboard box blank, a lid 61, lid flap 65, front and rear wall members 62, 63 and corner tubes 64a, 64b, 64c, 64d are also provided. In a further embodiment (Fig. 10), the cover member is formed of two separate sections 101, 102 of corrugated cardboard, so positioned that when the honeycomb material 108 is expanded, the gap 109 is closed. In a still further embodiment (Fig. 12, not shown) two slices are secured in spaced relationship to a piece of cardboard folded to provide upright end portions and a base portion, which has a fold therein. This embodiment is used for supporting articles (e.g. jars) which only need to be held at their tops and bottoms.
