Abstract

(A) silicon nitride whiskers and (B) silicon carbide whiskers are prepared by electrically heating a hollow tube containing (a) silicon nitride or (b) silicon to (a) 1580 DEG to 1600 DEG C. or (b) up to 2000 DEG C., and pumping (a) nitrogen or (b) argon into the tube to carry silicon through apertures in the tube into an annular reaction zone formed between the tube and a thermally insulated casing at a temperature about 200 DEG C. lower than that of the tube, whereupon (a) silicon and nitrogen react to form whiskers on a substrate, or (b) silicon reacts with a carbon substrate. The carrier gas may be preheated and/or recycled. Specifications 998,089 and 1,001,606 are referred to.
