Abstract

Apparatus for washing web, strip or strand material in a continuous process comprises a plurality of separate washing units, each consisting of a vat through which the material successively passes, and means disposed behind said vat to remove liquor from the material leaving the vat, the length of material between each adjacent pair of liquor removing means being greater or less, depending on the travel direction of the web through the apparatus, than in the preceding pair, whereby the time taken for the material to pass through each succeeding unit is longer or shorter than that in the preceding unit. The vats may increase or decrease in size in the direction of travel of the web &c. material such that more or less material is contained in each successive vat. Alternatively the vats may be the same size but the length of material arranged therein may be varied by increasing or decreasing the lengths of loops of the material in the vats. In a further alternative arrangement the vat size and the length of loops of material therein are different so as to give different lengths of the material in the respective vats.
