Abstract
100,111. United Shoe Machinery Co., (Assignees of Standish, J. F.). Feb. 23, 1915, [Convention date]. Heels, machines for.-A machine for attaching wooden or other heels is provided with means for gripping the tread and rear face of the heel, and with means for adjustably retaining and guiding the gang of tools which operate upon the heel. The invention is described as applied to a heelattaching machine of the type described in United States Specification 1,081,917, the shoe being supported on a jack 4 secured to a stationary frame 3 and being adapted to be clamped by members 20, 28 carried by a reciprocating head 6, which is actuated by a cam 8 and a treadle rod 10. The tread-engaging member 20 is adjustable by a worm and wheel 22, 24 at the lower end of a shank piece 18, while the side-engaging member 28, which is fork-ended and padded, is pivoted for swinging adjustment to a shank piece 26. These two shank pieces are located in an horizontally adjustable table 12, and are geared together by rack teeth and a pinion 40 for equalizing adjustment, the member 20 being normally pressed downwards by a spring 38. For supporting the shoe from the inside, a shank-engaging member 68 is adjustably bolted to the jack 4. The jack 4 has secured to its upper end a pair of spaced plates 50, 52, shaped to the inside of the heel of the smallest shoe and provided with parallel slots through which extend guide-tubes 54 for drivers 48. The lower ends of the drivers, of which there are five arranged pentagonally, carry blocks 49, Fig. 5, for adjustment in slots 45 in a plate 44, which is spaced from a reciprocating plunger 42, while the upper ends of the drivers are bevelled slightly to cause the nails to enter the heel in a converging manner. Eachof the side tubes 54, Figs. 3 and 4, is rigidly set in a gauge block 56 located between the plates 50, 52, these blocks being adapted to be adjusted simultaneously by a slotted frame 58 provided with an adjusting-screw 60. The outer edges of the blocks 56, by contacting with the sides of the shoe, serve to locate the shoe symmetrically with respect to the drivers, and also to determine the distance of the nails from the edge of the work. The rear driver may be adjusted longitudinally in a slot 53, Fig. 3, and is then clamped by a set-nut 62. At their upper ends, the tubes 54 are provided with conical heads to ensure that the nails will be driven with their heads flush with the insole.
