Auxiliary traction mechanism for increasing the tractive force exerted by a tractor comprises a pair of spiked auxiliary wheels 3 journalled on frames 6 pivotally mounted on the rear axle so that each auxiliary wheel 3 may be individually lowered into contact with the ground to carry some or all of the driving wheel load by means of double-acting hydraulic cylinders 10 connected to the hydraulic supply by a power-lift mechanism or to a separate supply. The auxiliary wheels 3 may be driven by chain gearing and clutches from the driving wheel hubs as shown, by belt or toothed gearing, or by fluid motors connected to a hydrostatic transmission. The auxiliary wheels shown may be replaced by wheels having projecting spade lugs, spuds or bars, by spiked drums extending jointly across the width of the tractor, or by hubs from which extend spiked radial arms having annular intermediate supports. Raising and lowering of the auxiliary wheels may be effected by mechanical, electrical or pneumatic power instead of by hydraulic power. The auxiliary wheels may alternatively, or in addition, be mounted at the front or rear of the tractor and they may be mounted for rectilinear movement during raising and lowering instead of for arcuate movement as shown.
