Abstract
Substantially waxless pressure responsive transfer compositions comprise a thermoplastic polymer of vinyl or vinylidene chloride, colouring matter, an organic nitrogen compound which is solid or is a liquid having a boiling point above 170 DEG C. and has an alkyl chain of at least 5 carbon atoms, an alkylaryl group or an alkanol group attached to a nitrogen atom, a finely divided inorganic filler and a non-volatile, non-drying oil in which the polymer is substantially insoluble and which serves as a medium in which the colouring matter is dispersed and/or dissolved. The polymer may be a copolymer of vinyl or vinylidene chloride, e.g. with vinyl esters or vinyl ethers, the preferred polymer being a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer. Specified colouring matter is carbon black, Milori blue and dyes. Specified nitrogen compounds are amines, imidazolines, alkanolamines and salts thereof. The filler may be clay, calcium sulphate or titanium dioxide. Specified oils are mineral oils, castor oil, sperm oil, ricinoleic acid and alcohols. The compositions may also comprise surface-active agents and plasticizers for the polymer, and may be applied to substrates from volatile organic solvents for the polymer and oil. Examples describe compositions comprising (I) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, castor oil, ricinoleic acid, carbon black, china clay, colouring matter, a dialkyl imidazoline and methylene chloride; (II) vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer, mineral oil, carbon black, china clay, stearylamine, methylene chloride and benzene; (III) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, oleyl alcohol, china clay, colouring matter, a dialkyl imidazoline and methyl ethyl ketone; (IV) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, carbon black, oleyl alcohol, burnt umber, diethanolamine and methylene chloride; and (V) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, carbon black, oleyl alcohol, burnt umber, the dioleate salt of an amine derived from tallow and methylene chloride.ALSO:Pressure responsive transfers, e.g. carbon papers, comprise substrates coated with substantially waxless pressure responsive transfer compositions comprising a thermoplastic polymer of vinyl or vinylidene chloride, colouring matter, an organic nitrogen compound which is solid or is a liquid having a boiling point above 170 DEG C. and has an alkyl chain of at least 5 carbon atoms, an alkylaryl group or an alkanol group attached to a nitrogen atom, a finely divided inorganic filler and a non-volatile, non-drying oil in which the polymer is substantially insoluble and which serves as a medium in which the colouring matter is dispersed and/or dissolved. The polymer may be a copolymer of vinyl and/or vinylidene chloride, e.g. with vinyl esters and vinyl ethers. Specified colouring matter is carbon black, milori blue and dyes. Specified nitrogen compounds are amines, imidazolines, alkanolamines and salts thereof. The filler may be clay, calcium sulphate, or titanium dioxide. Examples describe the application to substrates of compositions comprising (I) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, castor oil, ricinoleic acid, carbon black, china clay, colouring matter, a dialkyl imidazoline and methylene chloride; (II) vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer, mineral oil, carbon black, china clay, stearylamine, methylene chloride and benzene; (III) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, oleyl alcohol, china clay, colouring matter, a dialkyl imidazoline and methyl ethyl ketone; (IV) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, carbon black, oleyl alcohol, burnt umber, diethanolamine and methylene chloride; and (V) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, carbon black, oleyl alcohol, burnt umber, the dioleate salt of an amine derived from tallow and methylene chloride.
