Abstract

1,000,497. Brake control valves; valves. PATONS BRAKE REPLACEMENTS PROPRIETARY Ltd. Jan. 27, 1964 [Feb. 8, 1963], No. 3426/64. Headings F2F and F2V. An emergency control valve for compressed air power brake systems for motor vehicles fitted with trailers comprises a hollow body portion 2 having an air inlet port 8 and a plurality of air outlet ports 19, 21, an inlet valve 14 for controlling the passage of compressed air from the inlet to the outlets, a spring influenced diaphragm 6 located between the inlet and outlet ports and carrying a displaceable valve seating 26, the spring 18 associated with the diaphragm being adapted to urge the seating 26 towards the inlet valve 14 against the influence of in-flowing air, and manually adjustable venting means 31 having a seating 36 which is also engageable by the inlet valve 14. As shown, the inlet of the valve is connected to a compressed air storage tank 11 (or pump) and the outlets are connected by pipes 22, 23 respectively to the trailer braking system and a main control valve unit 24 on the vehicle. The latter acting to apply the trailer brakes on actuation of the driver's valve 46 to apply the vehicle brakes. When the air compressor is started pressure acts on the diaphragm 6 and causes it to move upwardly until the upper end of the valve seat 26 abuts stop 38, the inlet valve 14 closing the venting means 31, so that the braking system of the trailer is primed. The brakes will then work normally. However, if the air line 22 breaks compressed air in the line 22 will escape and the diaphragm 6 and valve seat 26 will move downwardly until the latter engages the inlet valve 14. The pressure in the tank 11 will be reduced but will be sufficient for emergency braking of the vehicle. Preferably, a breakaway valve applies the trailer brakes. If the driver now moves a lever 41 to move the venting means upwardly by the cable 39, the pressure in the tank may rise to its normal value without opening the inlet valve.
