A phase-splitting amplifier comprises two parallel-connected transistors T1, T2 of opposite conductivity types having their bases connected in parallel to an input terminal 1, their collectors connected in parallel to a first common load 18 and their emitters connected in parallel to a second common load 19 so that a signal applied to input terminal 1 gives rise to signals across the loads 18, 19 of substantially equal amplitudes but opposite polarities. The use of two transistors of opposite conductivity types reduces second-harmonic distortion. Distortion is further reduced by negative feedback provided by the common connection of the emitters to load 19.
