Abstract

In a process for the production of b -carotene by aerobically culturing + and - forms of Blakeslea trispora in a nutrient medium, there is also present (a) anamide of formula RCONR1R2 where R is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing up to 6 carbon atoms, an aryl or an aralkyl radical, and R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals containing up to 4 carbon atoms, (b) an imide of formula <FORM:1000409/C2/1> where R3 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing up to 8 carbon atoms, (c) a lactam of formula <FORM:1000409/C2/2> where R3 is as above, or (d) a sulphoxide of formula R4SOR5 where R4 and R5 are alkyl radicals containing up to 4 carbon atoms. Compounds of the above formulae which may be used are dimethylformamide, acetamide, dimethylacetamide, propionamide, butyramide, succinimide, N-bromosuccinimide, N-hydroxymethylsuccinimide, caprolactam, a -pyrrolidone and dimethylsulphoxide. The nutrient medium also may contain 2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexanone or its semicarbazone, b -ionone, 2,2,4-trimethyl-6-ethoxy-1, 2-dihydroquinoline, N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine and thiamine, besides the usual sources of carbon and nitrogen and mineral salts. Examples are given.
