Abstract

1,000,304. Heat-responsive actuating devices. U.S. SERVICATOR CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1962 [Jan. 17, 1961], No. 188/62. Heading F1S. [Also in Divisions B7, F2 and H2] In the device shown, an electric heater coil 38 surrounding a bi-metallic element 18 heats the latter to cause its free end to swing to the right, whereby a pawl 43 carried by the element turns a ratchet wheel 40 through a distance of one tooth. At the end of this movement, an arm 27 carried by the element 18 brings a spring 32 over dead centre to snap a switch arm 30 from the position shown, in which it rests against a stop 20, to a position in which it rests against a stop 21. The switch arm 30 is then disengaged from a contact 31, whereby the heater coil 38 is de-energized. The bi-metallic element 18 then cools down and returns to the position shown, backward movement of the ratchet wheel 40 being prevented by an adjustable pawl 46. Switch arm 30 then resumes the position shown, and the cycle of operations re-commences. Eventually, the ratchet wheel 40 has turned sufficiently to operate a switch 60 by means of a cam 50 and lever 51. The bi-metallic element 18 is pre-stressed by means of an adjustable stop screw 24, to ensure that it does not move in response to changes in ambient temperature. Arm 27 has a series of notches 28, the end of spring 32 being hooked over a selected notch. Stops 20 and 21 can be adjusted by bending them. Alternatively, they may be provided with adjusting screws. Contact 31 may be attached to terminal 35a instead of terminal 35 so that heating of the bi-metallic element 18 occurs during its return stroke instead of its driving stroke. Cam 50 and lever 51 may be replaced by gearing, and things other than a switch 60 may be operated. The heater coil supply may be connected to the ignition circuit of a motor vehicle so that the device operates only when the ignition is switched on and gives notice (as by the ejection of printed cards from a casing), in accordance with total elapsed running time of the vehicle engine, that the vehicle should be serviced.
