Abstract

A method of making a foamed polyurethane comprises reacting a polyalkylene polyol, an organic polyisocyanate, water, a gel catalyst constituted by an organic tin compound and a blowing catalyst constituted by a soap of antimony, bismuth or arsenic. "Polyalkylene polyol" denotes an organic compound having reactive hydrogen atoms as determined by the Zerewitinoff Determination and includes polyesters (including fatty acid glycerides), polyethers, polyisocyanate-modified polyesters, polyesteramides or alkylene glycols, polymercaptans and polyamines. The organic tin compound is preferably of the formula Sn(OCOR)2 or R1aSnXb, wherein R and R1 are hydrocarbon radicals and X is chlorine or a negative residual portion of an organic carboxylic acid, a mercaptide, an alcohol or an ester of a mercaptoacid, each of a and b being an integer from 1 to 3 and a plus b being 4. The polyisocyanate may be an alkylene or arylene di-isocyanate or a tri-isocyanate such as a reaction product of an arylene diisocyanate and a triol. The blowing catalyst is preferably formed from an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 7 to 22 carbon atoms. In examples, foams are prepared by reacting a glycerine/propylene oxide reaction product, a silicone cell-modifying agent, tolylene diisocyanate, dimeralized water, metal soap and tin compound. The tin compounds used are stannous 2-ethyl hexoate, stannous oleate, dibutyltin dilaurate and dibutyltin dilauryl mercaptide. Soaps specified are antimony tri-2-ethylhexoate, tritallate, tripelargonate, tri-tetrachlorobenzoate and tri-cyclohexylcarboxylate; arsenic trioleate and tripelargonate; bismuth tri-2-ethylhexoate and trioleate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 892,137.
