Abstract

Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting hydroxyl group-containing polymers with organic polyisocyanates in the presence of a catalyst comprising a tertiary amine of the formula <FORM:0990637/C3/1> in which R is a radical of the formula <FORM:0990637/C3/2> or <FORM:0990637/C3/3> and the substituents R1 which may be the same or different are hydrogen, methyl or ethyl. The tertiary amines of the above formula specified are N,N - dimethyl - 2 - phenylethylamine, N,N - dimethyl - 2 - p - tolylethylamine and N,N - dimethyl - 2 - cyclohexylethylamine and mixtures thereof. The hydroxyl group containing polymers may be polyethers, polyesters and polyesteramides or mixtures thereof and many starting materials for the preparation of such polymers are specified. Polyisocyanates specified are hexamethylene di-isocyanate, 2,4-tolylene and 2,6-tolylene di-isocyanates, di-phenyl -methane-4,41-di-isocyanate, m- and p-phenylene di-isocyanates, chlorophenylene-2,4-di-isocyanate, dicyclohexylmethane di-isocyanate, 2,4,6 - tri - isocyanatotoluene, 2,4,41-tri -isocyanatodiphenyl ether and polymers of tolylene-2,4 and -2,6-di-isocyanates. Mixtures of polyisocyanates may also be used, e.g. the phosgenated mixed polyamine reaction products of formaldehyde and aromatic amines such as aniline and o-toluidine. Other ingredients which may be present include catalysts, e.g. dimethylcyclohexylamine, triethylamine, dimethylbenzylamine, N - methylmorpholine, tetramethylguanidine, triethylenediamine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, potassium carbonate, potassium acetate, potassium naphthenate, basic lead acetate, lead carboxylates, zinc or lead dialkyldithiophosphates, transition metal acetylacetonates, di - n - butyltin dilaurate and stannous octoate; nonionic surface-active agents, salts of sulphuric acid derivatives of high molecular weight organic compounds, silicone oils such as alkyland aryl-polysiloxanes and copolymers thereof with alkylene oxides; foam stabilizing agents such as ethyl cellulose; low molecular weight polyols such as trimethylolpropane; colouring matters; plasticizers such as dialkyl phthalates; fireproofing agents such as tri-b -chloroethyl phosphate and antimony compounds; and blowing agents such as volatile fluoroalkanes and water. Examples are given of the production of polyurethane foams by the process of the invention. Specifications 990,631 and 990,632 are referred to.
