Abstract

A method of operating a computing device so as to conserve power comprises restricting access to applications and functionality in dependence upon the power level available from a power resource in the device. The power source may be a battery, solar, photovoltaic or any electrical source. Applications are categorised according to their essential nature to the operation of the device or on a continuous scale reflecting their importance to the device. This categorisation may be user led, provided by the operating system or the component manufacturers. In use the device obtains the current level of power. On the basis of the power level access to applications or functionality is restricted. In a further step applications currently running may be shut down when the power level drops below a predetermined level.
