Abstract

An emergency light comprises a lamp 20 powered by a mains supply, a back-up battery 25 and associated mains failure sensor (40, fig. 5) , and a light sensor (46, fig 5) for detecting a loss of the ambient light and to trigger the light to operate. The battery may be contained in the stem 24 of the lamp. The lamp itself may be unconnected from its base unit to provide a portable battery powered light.
