Abstract

A energy management system provides the capability for a community server 150 to schedule jobs to be done in each household in a community, based on the availability, monetary cost and/or environmental cost of the energy required to complete a specific job, for example a washing cycle in a washing machine. The server receives from each household, task data indicative of at least one indicated task, each indicated task being associated with an energy consuming unit, and the server manages the provision of energy sources by creating a job schedule for scheduling the requested jobs as efficiently as possible and to complete performance of the indicated tasks in accordance with a community energy use strategy. The energy requirements and usage of the community can be tailored to favour usage of preferred and/or available energy resources, for instance by favouring the use of renewable or green energy resources over the use of fossil fuels.
