Abstract

A system for heating and ventilating a building comprising a heat pump consisting a compressor 9, at least one heat exchanger, a means for exhausting air from the building, at least one fan, a fresh air supply, a means for cooling the exhausted air and a controller. Preferably the system includes thermally insulated window shutters 21, 26. The heat pump construction may be contained with in an air tight casing 1, including an extractor fan 6 for removing the buildings internal circulating air via a spigot 2, and then passing this circulating air over an evaporator 8 to cool the air below that of the external air, before exhausting it to the external atmosphere via a spigot 4. The refrigerant vapour produced from the evaporator 8 is pumped by the compressor to a first condenser 10 used primarily for warming the incoming fresh air, induced by a fan 11 via a spigot 5. The external fresh air is preferably cleaned via a filter 12 and optionally dehumidified by a second evaporator 13 before being reheated by the first condenser and finally distributed into the building via spigots 3. Furthermore, a reversing valve may be used to change the function of the condenser 10 so that it becomes an evaporator, cooling the fresh air supply, and the evaporator coil 8 acts as a condenser to dissipate the heat extracted by the condenser 10. Periodically the refrigerant fluid flow through the evaporator 8 may be reversed so that it is continually defrosted. An additional condenser 14 may be included for heating tap water or a fluid for the purpose of transferring heat to a heat store. Alternatively, the cooled exhausted air may be used to cool a food storage area.
