Abstract

555,547. Moulding artificial dentures &c. in plaster moulds. AMALGAMATED DENTAL CO., Ltd., and WILDING, S. W. May 14, 1942, No. 6571. [Class 87 (ii)] In a process for making artificial dentures or other models or plaster positives by the use of moulds made from plaster of Paris or other plaster composed mainly of calcium sulphate, the mould is coated with a solution in water of a soluble alginate, such as sodium or potassium alginate. The alginate and calcium sulphate interact to form a film of calcium alginate on the mould which prevents the plaster from sticking to the denture and imparts a smooth surface to the denture, which may be made of polymerized methyl methacrylate. The plaster need not be warmed during the modelling process. To prevent the film of calcium alginate from becoming too dry on exposure to the atmosphere and peeling off the plaster, glycerine, ethylene glycol or other hygroscopic substance may be added to the solution.
