[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 27, 1934.] [Class 7 (iii)] A precombustion chamber is provided with electrical heating-means which is normally placed in operation during idling and/or when the engine is operating at low speeds, by means of a regulating-member actuated in dependence on the speed or conjointly with the means for controlling the fuel supply. A heating-device d, formed of material having a high thermal conductivity and a high resistance to heat, such as beryllium bronze, surrounds the chamber b, which is made of steel of low heat conductivity, and is insulated from the outer wall by mica or asbestos. Current is supplied by a battery e, and the circuit is opened or closed by a switch f connected to the accelerator pedal g or to the governor. Instead of opening and closing the circuit, the current may be regulated by a resistance varied by the position of the pedal g. Further switches h, i are provided to enable the circuit to be opened or closed independently of the regulating-member. The heating-means may comprise incandescent spirals or heating-pins projecting into the precombustion chamber.
