Abstract

Compositions and methods for styling hair

The present disclosure relates to compositions comprising at least one betaine or a salt thereof and at least one polysaccharide, and methods of using the compositions to style hair.

CONTEXT

Curly hair usually appears shorter than its actual length. In the multicultural beauty market, there is a desire for products that can elongate hair curls and give hair more visual length. Additionally, reducing curl in very curly hair can increase the manageability and styleability of that hair.

Among the concerns of curly hair consumers is that their curly hair appears shorter than its actual length and/or that the curls are not defined enough. In the multicultural beauty market, there is a desire for products that lengthen and/or define curls to highlight the natural curl pattern. Existing products on the market that help prevent curl shrinkage often use heavy dosage forms with various butters or oils that can leave hair feeling greasy or oily. Products that add hold, like styling gels, can also have lengthening effects, but these products typically flake on the hair. Therefore, the use of these lengthening products generally requires frequent washing of the hair, which is particularly undesirable for consumers who have pronounced curls and prefer a limited number of washes per week and who wish to maintain hairstyles that last all day or several days. Additionally, traditional hair lengthening, including straightening or straightening hair, often involves chemical processing or high heat that can damage hair fibers and/or irritate the scalp.

Also, consumers desire new and improved styling compositions that can deliver visible and long-lasting lengthening of hair curls and/or that provide visible and long-lasting curl definition and hold, particularly in humid conditions, and at the same time time impart various additional beneficial properties to hair such as hydration, softness, smoothness, good bounce, good shine, and/or frizz control.

It has now been surprisingly discovered that cosmetic compositions comprising at least betaine and at least one polysaccharide are capable of improving the lengthening of hair curls and/or of offering definition and hold of curls, in particularly in humid conditions, as well as providing other benefits such as hydration, softness, frizz control, and/or manageability benefits to the hair.

SUMMARY

The present disclosure relates to compositions for styling hair, for example by improving the elongation of hair curls and/or providing curl definition and/or hold. The compositions are optionally leave-in hair styling compositions, and may, for example, be in the form of a serum, a gel, a gel-cream, a cream, a lotion, or similar.

The compositions comprise (a) at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts or mixtures thereof, (b) at least one polysaccharide, and (c) at least one solvent. In various embodiments, the pH of the composition is less than about 8. The compositions may optionally further include additional components such as, for example, lactones, film-forming polymers, anionic surfactants, pH correctors, or mixtures of these.

In various embodiments, the hair styling compositions according to the disclosure comprise (a) from approximately 0.01% to approximately 10% of at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts, or mixtures thereof, ( b) from about 0.01% to about 10% of at least one polysaccharide, and (c) at least one solvent, in which all amounts are by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. For example, the compositions may comprise a total quantity of compounds chosen from betaines, their salts or mixtures thereof, ranging from approximately 0.05% to approximately 5%, preferably from approximately 0.1% to approximately 4%. more preferably about 0.2% to about 3%, even more preferably about 0.3% to about 2.5%, about 0.4% to about 2%, more preferably among all from about 0.5% to about 1%, by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition, and/or may comprise a total amount of polysaccharides ranging from about 0.05% to about 5%, preferably from about 0.1% to about 4%, more preferably from about 0.2% to about 3%, even more preferably from about 0.3% to about 2.5%, about 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably about 0.5% to about 1%, by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

In various embodiments, the compositions have a weight ratio of the total amount of (b) polysaccharides: (a) betaines or salts thereof ranging from about 10:1 to about 0.01:1, preferably about 8 :1 to about 0.1:1, more preferably about 5:1 to about 0.25:1, even more preferably about 2:1 to about 0.5:1, more preferably between all from about 1.5:1 to about 0.75:1.

In certain embodiments, the at least one betaine comprises at least one compound chosen from trimethylglycine, cocobetaine, cocamidopropyl betaine, behenyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, or mixtures thereof. In some embodiments, the at least one betaine comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of trimethylglycine.

In various embodiments, the polysaccharide is chosen from anionic polysaccharides, cationic polysaccharides, nonionic polysaccharides or mixtures thereof, preferably anionic polysaccharides, cationic polysaccharides or mixtures thereof, more preferably anionic polysaccharides. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of xanthan gum, carrageenan, hydroxypropyl guar, or mixtures thereof. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl guar, or a mixture thereof. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of xanthan gum. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of carrageenan. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of hydroxypropyl guar. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of a mixture of xanthan gum, carrageenan, and hydroxypropyl guar. In some embodiments, the polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of a mixture of xanthan gum and hydroxypropyl guar.

In some embodiments, the at least one betaine comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of, trimethylglycine, and the at least one polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of anionic polysaccharides, cationic polysaccharides, or mixtures thereof, preferably anionic polysaccharides. In certain embodiments, the at least one betaine comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of trimethylglycine, and the at least one polysaccharide comprises, consists essentially of, or consists of xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl guar, carrageenan, or mixtures thereof, preferably xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl guar, or mixtures thereof, most preferably xanthan gum.

In some particular embodiments, the composition comprises (a) about 0.1% to about 5%, preferably about 0.2% to about 4%, more preferably about 0.3% at about 3%, even more preferably from about 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably from about 0.5% to about 1% of at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts or mixtures thereof, (b) from about 0.1% to about 5%, preferably from about 0.2% to about 4%, more preferably from about 0.3% to about 3%, even more preferably from about 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably from about 0.5% to about 1% of at least one anionic polysaccharide, and (c) at least one solvent, wherein the weight ratio of the total amount of (b) anionic polysaccharides: (a) betaines or their salts is between about 10:1 and about 0.01:1, and wherein all amounts are by weight, relative to to the total weight of the composition. In some embodiments, the weight ratio of the total amount of (b) anionic polysaccharides: (a) betaines or their salts is between about 8:1 and about 0.1:1, preferably between about 5:1 and about 0.25:1, more preferably between about 2:1 and about 0.5:1, most preferably between about 1.5:1 and about 0.75:1.

For example, the at least one betaine may comprise at least one compound chosen from trimethylglycine, cocobetaine, cocamidopropyl betaine, behenyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, or mixtures thereof. In another example, the composition comprises trimethylglycine, preferably present in an amount ranging from about 0.3% to about 3%, more preferably from about 0.4% to about 2%, more preferably among all from about 0.5% to about 1% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition.

In some embodiments, the composition includes xanthan gum, carrageenan, hydroxypropyl guar, or mixtures thereof, preferably present in an amount ranging from about 0.1% to about 5%. , more preferably about 0.2% to about 4%, even more preferably about 0.3% to about 3%, even more preferably about 0.4% to about 2% , most preferably from about 0.5% to about 1% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition.

The compositions may optionally include a pH corrector, for example citric acid and/or its salts. In various embodiments, the compositions include a buffer system. In various embodiments, the composition has a pH ranging from about 3 to about 7.5, more preferably from about 3.3 to about 7.2, even more preferably from about 4 to about 6 , more preferably from about 4.5 to about 5.5.

In other embodiments, the compositions comprise at least one additional component, which may, by way of example only, be chosen from at least one additional component chosen from lactones, fixing polymers, anionic surfactants, or their mixtures.

In some embodiments, the compositions include (a) from about 0.01% to about 10%, preferably from about 0.05% to about 5%, more preferably from about 0.1% to approximately 4%, even more preferably approximately 0.2% to approximately 3%, approximately 0.3% to approximately 2.5%, or 0.4% to approximately 2%, preferably between all from about 0.5% to about 1% of at least one betaine, a salt thereof, or mixtures thereof, preferably trimethylglycine, (b) from about 0.01% to about 10% , preferably from about 0.05% to about 5%, more preferably from about 0.1% to about 4%, even more preferably from about 0.2% to about 3%, about 0.3% to about 2.5%, or from 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably from about 0.5% to about 1% of at least one polysaccharide chosen from anionic saccharides , cationic saccharides, or mixtures thereof, and (c) at least one solvent. Preferably, the weight ratio of the total amount of (b) polysaccharides: (a) betaines or their salts is between about 10:1 and about 0.01:1, more preferably between about 8:1 and about 0.1:1, more preferably between about 5:1 and about 0.25:1 or between about 2:1 and about 0.5:1, most preferably between about 1.5:1 and about 0.75:1.

Preferably, the weight ratio of the total amount of (b) anionic polysaccharides: (a) trimethylglycine is between about 10:1 and about 0.01:1, more preferably between about 8:1 and about 0.1 :1, more preferably between about 5:1 and about 0.25:1 or between about 2:1 and about 0.5:1, most preferably between about 1.5:1 and about 0.75 :1.

Preferably, the weight ratio of the total amount of (b) polysaccharides: (a) betaines or their salts is between about 10:1 and about 0.01:1, more preferably between about 8:1 and about 0.1:1, more preferably between about 5:1 and about 0.25:1 or between about 2:1 and about 0.5:1, most preferably between about 1.5:1 and about 0.75:1.

Preferably, the composition comprises at least one additional component chosen from pH correctors, lactones, fixing polymers, anionic surfactants, or mixtures thereof.

In some embodiments, the compositions are leave-in compositions for styling hair, particularly curly hair, for example to lengthen curls, to improve length retention, or to increase the visual length of curly hair.

The disclosure also relates to methods of using the compositions, e.g. methods for styling hair such as methods for lengthening curls, methods for lengthening the visual appearance of hair, methods for reducing shrinkage in length of hair , methods for maintaining curl elongation, and/or methods for reducing frizz, even under conditions of high relative humidity, the methods comprising applying the composition to wet, damp or dry hair. Optionally, the methods do not include a heating step. The processes generally provide one or more styling benefits to the hair, such as curl lengthening, curl definition, frizz control, smoothness and/or softness.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The disclosure relates to compositions for styling hair, particularly curly hair, as well as methods of using the compositions.

I. Compositions

In various embodiments, the compositions according to the disclosure comprise (a) at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts, or mixtures thereof; (b) at least one polysaccharide; and (c) at least one solvent.

The compositions according to the disclosure may improve hair curl elongation and/or persistence of hair curl elongation, may improve curl definition and/or curl hold, and/or may provide additional benefits. such as softness, smoothness and/or hair frizz control.

Betaines

The compositions according to the disclosure comprise at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts or their mixtures. In various embodiments, non-limiting examples of useful betaines include alkyl betaines, amido betaines, or mixtures thereof.

In some embodiments, exemplary useful betaines include, but are not limited to, those of the following formulas (Ia-Id), their salts or mixtures thereof:

By way of example only, useful betaines include, for example, trimethylglycine (also called glycine betaine), cocobetaine, cocamidopropyl betaine, lauryl betaine, laurylhydroxy sulfobetaine, lauryldimethyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, behenyl betaine , capryl/capramidopropyl betaine, lauryl hydroxysultaine, stearyl betaine, or mixtures thereof. In certain preferred embodiments, the at least one compound chosen from betaines and their salts is chosen from trimethylglycine, cocobetaine, cocamidopropyl betaine, behenyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, or mixtures thereof, more preferably trimethylglycine, cocamidopropyl betaine, behenyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, or mixtures thereof.

Polysaccharides

The compositions according to the disclosure comprise at least one polysaccharide. Polysaccharides may be anionic, cationic, nonionic, or a mixture thereof. In certain embodiments, the polysaccharides are chosen from anionic or cationic polysaccharides, more preferably anionic polysaccharides. Polysaccharides which may be chosen include, by way of example only, inulins, celluloses, starches and gums such as guar gums, xanthan gums, pullulan gums, alginate gums, agar-agar gums, carrageenan gums, gellan gums, gum arabic, xyloses, tragacanth gums or derivatives of the above. Mixtures of two or more polysaccharides can also be chosen.

Non-limiting examples of gums include acacia, agar, algin, alginic acid, ammonium alginate, amylopectin, calcium alginate, calcium carrageenan, carnitine, carrageenan, dextrin, gelatin, gellan gum, guar gum, hectorite, hyaluronic acid, hydrated silica, hydroxypropyl chitosan, hydroxypropyl guar, karaya gum, kelp, gum locust bean, natto gum, potassium alginate, potassium carrageenan, propylene glycol alginate, sclerotinia gum, sodium carboxymethyl dextran, sodium carrageenan, tragacanth gum, xanthan gum and biosaccharide gum. The solvent may be present in the composition in an amount ranging from about 50% to about 98% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, including all intermediate ranges and subranges. For example, in one embodiment, the total amount of solvent may be from about 50% to about 95%, from about 60% to about 95%, from about 70% to about 95%, from about 70% to about 95% % to approximately 90%, approximately 75% to 95%, or approximately 75% to 90% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. The compositions according to the disclosure optionally include one or more film-forming polymers. In certain non-limiting embodiments, the film-forming polymers are non-ionic film-forming polymers. In some embodiments, the compositions are free or substantially free of film-forming polymers, or are free of or substantially free of film-forming polymers other than non-ionic film-forming polymers.

Anionic surfactants

The compositions according to the disclosure optionally comprise at least one anionic surfactant. In various embodiments, suitable anionic surfactants may be chosen from sulfate/sulfonate, non-sulfate or carboxylate type anionic surfactants. For example, alkyl sulfates, alkyl ether sulfates, alkyl monoglyceride sulfates, alkylaryl sulfates, alkyl ether carboxylates, fatty acyl sarcosinates, fatty acyl glutamates, alkyl phosphates, alkyl sulfoacetates, alkoxylated monoacids, alkyl sulfonates, alkyl amidesulfonates, alkylaryl sulfonates, alkyl-monoglyceride sulfonates, α-olefin sulfonates, paraffin sulfonates, alkyl sulfosuccinates, alkyl ether sulfosuccinates, alkyl amidesulfosuccinates, alkyl sulfoacetates, N-acyltaurates, acylisethionates, alkyl sulfolaurates, their salts, or mixtures thereof, the alkyl groups of these compounds optionally including from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, such as from 12 to 28 carbon atoms, from 14 to 24 carbon atoms, or 16 to 22 carbon atoms, the aryl group of these compounds being optionally chosen from phenyl or benzyl groups, and these compounds being optionally polyoxyalkylenated, for example polyoxyethylenated, including from 1 to 50 ethylene oxide units, such as from 2 to 10 ethylene oxide patterns. In some preferred embodiments, the anionic surfactant comprises one or more alkyl sulfonates.

Example 4 therefore demonstrates that hair styling compositions according to the disclosure comprising xanthan gum in combination with various betaines or combinations of betaines surprisingly provide elongation (length retention), curl definition and frizz control. for curly hair better than hair treatment compositions not in accordance with the disclosure.

Example 5 - Synergy with betaines and polysaccharides

Inventive compositions 5A-5D in Table 5 were prepared by combining trimethylglycine and the specified polysaccharide in water, and the pH was corrected with a small amount of citric acid. Comparative compositions C15-C21 were prepared by adding the specified amounts of polysaccharide or carbomer to water, and correcting the pH with a small amount of citric acid.

Identical sections of very curly hair were washed with standard shampoo, rinsed, and detangled. Equal amounts of one of the inventive compositions 5A-5D or comparative compositions C15-C21 were applied to two separate strands of wet hair (twenty-two strands) and distributed by raking through the curls to ensure uniform distribution. The treated hair strands were allowed to air dry for 12 hours and then placed in a humidity chamber at 80% relative humidity at 25°C for 8 hours. Hair strands treated with compositions 5A-5D or C15-C21 were evaluated in terms of elongation (length retention).

There shows that the inventive compositions 5A-5D demonstrated better length retention of the treated hair in comparison to the comparative compositions C7-C14, even when subjected to high humidity. In particular, strands treated with a combination of betaine and polysaccharide demonstrated better length retention than strands treated with betaine and a non-polysaccharide film-forming polymer (carbomer). This result demonstrates the astonishing and unexpected synergy between betaines and polysaccharides, in particular anionic and cationic polysaccharides (compositions 5A, 5B, 5C), to impart length or elongation of curls to curly hair.

Example 5 therefore demonstrates that the hair styling compositions according to the disclosure comprising a betaine in combination with a polysaccharide surprisingly offer better elongation (length preservation) to curly hair than the hair treatment compositions not in accordance with the disclosure, even in high humidity conditions.

Example 6 – Hair styling compositions

The inventive hair styling compositions 6A-6B of Table 6 were prepared in the form of serums. The compositions had a pH in the range of 4.5-5.0,

Compositions 6A and 6B are hair styling compositions that can be applied to dry, damp or wet hair to impart curl lengthening, curl defining and/or frizz reducing properties to the hair.

The examples above demonstrate that the compositions according to the disclosure provide surprising and unexpected synergistic benefits such as improved curl definition, curl elongation (length retention), and/or frizz control at the ends. hair.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and variations may be made to the compositions and methods according to the disclosure without departing from the spirit or scope of the disclosure. Thus, it is intended that the disclosure covers such modifications and variations and their equivalents.

Claims (10)

Composition for styling or shaping hair comprising:
(a) from approximately 0.01% to approximately 10% of at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts or their mixtures,
(b) from about 0.01% to about 10% of at least one polysaccharide, and
(c) at least one solvent,
wherein the pH of the composition is less than about 8; And
in which all quantities are by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. Composition according to claim 1, in which:
the total amount of betaines and their salts ranges from about 0.05% to about 5%, preferably from about 0.1% to about 4%, more preferably from about 0.2% to about 3 %, more preferably from about 0.3% to about 2.5%, 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably from about 0.5% to about 1%, by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition; And
the total amount of polysaccharides ranges from about 0.05% to about 5%, preferably from about 0.1% to about 4%, more preferably from about 0.2% to about 3%, so still more preferably about 0.3% to about 2.5%, 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably about 0.5% to about 1%, by weight, based on weight total composition. Composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the total amounts of (a) betaines and their salts and (b) polysaccharides in the composition are such that the weight ratio of (b) polysaccharides: (a) betaines or their salts in the composition is from about 10:1 to about 0.01:1, preferably from about 8:1 to about 0.1:1, more preferably from about 5:1 to about 0.25: 1, more preferably from about 2:1 to about 0.5:1, most preferably from about 1.5:1 to about 0.75:1. Composition according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the at least one betaine comprises at least one compound chosen from trimethylglycine, cocobetaine, cocamidopropyl betaine, behenyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, or mixtures thereof, preferably chosen among trimethylglycine. Composition according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the polysaccharide is chosen from anionic polysaccharides, cationic polysaccharides, nonionic polysaccharides, or mixtures thereof, preferably anionic polysaccharides, cationic polysaccharides, or mixtures thereof, so as to more preferred are anionic polysaccharides, most preferably xanthan gum. Composition according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising at least one additional component chosen from pH correctors, lactones, fixing polymers, anionic surfactants, or mixtures thereof. Composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pH of the composition is between about 3 and about 7.5, preferably between about 3.3 and about 7.2, more preferably between about 4 and about 6, most preferably between about 4.5 and about 5.5. Composition according to claim 1 comprising:
(a) from about 0.1% to about 5%, preferably from about 0.2% to about 4%, more preferably from about 0.3% to about 3%, even more preferably from approximately 0.4% to approximately 2%, most preferably from approximately 0.5% to approximately 1% of at least one compound chosen from betaines, their salts, or mixtures thereof, preferably trimethylglycine ,
(b) from about 0.1% to about 5%, preferably from about 0.2% to about 4%, more preferably from about 0.3% to about 3%, even more preferably from about 0.4% to about 2%, most preferably from about 0.5% to about 1% of at least one anionic polysaccharide, preferably xanthan gum, and
(c) at least one solvent,
in which the weight ratio of the total quantity of (b) anionic polysaccharides: (a) betaines or their salts is between about 10:1 and about 0.01:1, preferably between about 8:1 and about 0.1 :1, more preferably between about 5:1 and about 0.25:1, even more preferably between about 2:1 and about 0.5:1, most preferably between about 1.5:1 and approximately 0.75:1;
wherein the pH of the composition is between about 3 and about 7.5, preferably between about 3.3 and about 7.2, more preferably between about 4 and about 6, most preferably about 4 .5 and approximately 5.5; And
in which all quantities are by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. Hair styling or shaping process, comprising the application to the hair of a composition according to any one of the preceding claims. A process according to claim 9, wherein the process does not include a step of heating the hair after application of the composition to the hair.
