L'invention concerne un amortisseur (11) pour une suspension de véhicule automobile présentant un axe (X1) principal et comportant : - un corps (12) comportant un alésage (15) cylindrique débouchant par une ouverture (17) ; - une tige (14) en matériau ferromagnétique qui est montée coulissante coaxialement dans l'alésage (15) ; - une bague (38) de guidage en coulissement de la tige (14) ; caractérisé en ce qu'il comporte au moins un premier aimant (44) permanent qui est fixé dans l'alésage (15) radialement à distance de la tige (14) et qui est agencé à proximité de la bague (38) de guidage, le premier aimant exerçant sur la tige (14) une force (F1) d'attraction dans une première direction radiale déterminée.
