Abstract
Description
The invention is in the field of energy storage and more particularly in the field of electrodes for supercapacitors. A supercapacitor or electrochemical capacitor is a capacitor of particular structure for obtaining intermediate power and energy densities between conventional electrolytic capacitors and batteries. Most supercapacitors comprise two porous electrodes impregnated with electrolyte and separated by an insulating and porous membrane allowing the circulation of the ions contained in the electrolyte. The basic principle of supercapacitors is based on the capacitive properties of the interface between a solid electrical conductor and a liquid ion conductor. The energy storage is effected by the distribution of the ions of the electrolyte in the vicinity of the surface of each electrode, under the influence of an applied voltage. A space charge zone, called a double electrochemical layer, of a thickness limited to a few nanometers is thus created at the interfaces. Supercapacitors are therefore capabilities in their own right. Energy storage is de facto electrostatic, not electrochemical as in the case of accumulators, which gives them a potentially high specific power. One of the key parameters for achieving a high stored charge density is the geometry of the electrodes. Indeed, the capacitance C is proportional to the surface S of the electrode. Furthermore, an important parameter for achieving a large power output is the internal resistance of the electrode material. Indeed, the maximum stored energy Emax and the maximum power Pmax delivered are defined according to the basic relations 1 V2 P = 2 (ii) etrnax 4Ri (iii) where V is the bias voltage of the electrolyte and Ri is the internal resistance of the electrode material.
Thus, the most interesting results are obtained with electrodes having a very large specific surface in order to maximize the capacitance C and an electrolyte having good ionic conductivity in order to reduce the internal resistance Ri of the supercapacitor.
Many materials have already been used to make electrodes large areas, including mesoporous materials such as activated carbon, carbon nanotubes or metal foams. It is known that supercapacities based on activated carbon or carbon nanotubes lead to interesting performances. The power density of the activated carbon electrode devices is lower than the power density obtained with carbon nanotube electrodes. In fact, the phenomena limiting the power delivered by the devices consisting of activated carbon electrodes come from the resistance of the device, the latter being equivalent to the electrical resistance of the electrodes in series with the resistance of the electrolyte. The carbon nanotube electrodes have a lower electrical resistance. Indeed, the morphology of the carbon nanotubes leads to large open porosities favorable to the rapid movement of the ions between the electrodes and the electrolyte. The power delivered by devices comprising carbon nanotube electrodes is therefore increased relative to the power delivered by devices comprising activated carbon electrodes. In addition, the carbon nanotubes are capable of forming films having good mechanical properties without the addition of additives, such as carbon nanotube papers or "buckypapers." However, the carbon nanotube electrodes have a specific surface of the carbon nanotube. 250 to 850 m2.g-1, less than the specific surface area of the activated carbon electrodes which is of the order of 2000 to 3000 m2.g-1 because of the large size of the porosities.
Therefore, the energy densities of this type of device are less than the energy densities obtained by devices comprising activated carbon electrodes. It is therefore necessary to find compromises between the power delivered and the energy delivered by proposing new types of hybrid electrodes. The article by Taberna et al. "Activated carbon-carbon composite nanotube porous film for supercapacitor applications", Bull Res., 2006, vol 41, 478 discloses a hybrid material comprising activated carbon and carbon nanotubes. It improves the performance of an electrode comprising activated carbon by adding carbon nanotubes Different proportions of activated carbon and carbon nanotubes have been tested According to the authors, the resistance of the device decreases by 0.8 ohm .cm-2 to 0.6 15 ohm.cm-2 when the hybrid material comprises more than 15% by weight of carbon nanotubes, which increases the power delivered by the device by nearly 30%. The addition of carbon nanotubes has little influence on the value of the capacity, since when 15% by weight of carbon nanotubes is added, the specific capacity decreases from 92 to 88 Fg-1. Another solution would be to improve the performance of a carbon nanotube electrode by adding activated charcoal. Thus, it is possible to add mesoporous carbon as an additive to the carbon nanotube based electrodes. The idea is to increase the volume capacity of a paper of carbon nanotubes without degrading the power properties of the electrode. However, the addition of a particulate material whose size is substantially larger than the carbon nanotubes as is the case for activated carbon particles may be accompanied by a loss of mechanical cohesion of the material. An object of the invention is to develop a hybrid material based on carbon nanotubes and mesoporous carbon to increase the bulk capacity and energy density of buckypaper carbon nanotubes without degrading the power performance of nanotubes carbon, nor alter the good mechanical properties of the carbon nanotube film.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a supercapacitor electrode comprising: a first electrically conductive material, and mesoporous carbon. The first material has a three-dimensional structure and open porosities. The mesoporous carbon filled the porosities of said first material. The addition of mesoporous carbon inside the pores of the first material makes it possible to increase the specific capacity in terms of volume and the stored energy performances of the supercapacitor which uses them. In one embodiment, the first material comprises a paper of nanotubes or nanofibers of carbon. In another embodiment, the first material comprises a metal foam. According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for producing a supercapacitor electrode as described above. The process comprises several steps where: a gel comprising a silica precursor and a surfactant capable of forming mesoporous silica is impregnated, said first material is impregnated with said gel, said gel is condensed, and the surfactant present in the gel is removed; silica to form mesoporous silica inside said porosities, - a carbon precursor is injected into the pores of the silica, the carbon precursor is pyrolyzed in a neutral atmosphere, under vacuum or in the presence of a neutral gas, and the mesoporous silica is removed. Advantageously, the surfactant is removed by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere such as air, or by the use of a solvent. According to another embodiment, there is provided a method for producing a supercapacitor electrode as described above. The process comprises the steps in which: a gel comprising a silica precursor and a surfactant capable of forming mesoporous silica is produced, said first material is impregnated with said gel, said gel is condensed, the carbon precursor is pyrolyzed in an atmosphere neutral, under vacuum or in the presence of a neutral gas, and the mesoporous silica is removed. The proposed methods make it possible to generate mesoporous carbon within a material having a three-dimensional structure and having open cavities. The hybrid electrode thus produced has good mechanical properties. Advantageously, the first material comprises a metal foam. Advantageously, the first material comprises a paper of nanotubes or carbon nanofibers. The use of the surfactant also as a carbon precursor facilitates the process of elaboration of the electrode. Advantageously, the silica is removed by dissolving in a solution of sodium hydroxide. The invention will be better understood from the study of some embodiments described by way of non-limiting examples, and illustrated by the appended drawings in which: FIGS. 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d show the different steps method for preparing mesoporous carbon particles from mesoporous silica, according to one aspect of the invention, and FIGS. 2a, 2b, and 2c show the various steps of the process for producing a hybrid material comprising carbon nanotubes and mesoporous carbon, according to one aspect of the invention. Figure la illustrates the mesoporous silica 1, which can serve as a mold or "template" for the synthesis of mesoporous carbon.
Chem. Soc. 2000, 122, 994-995 », « Lu et al. Nature, Vol 389, 1997 Zhao et al. Adv. Mater. The preparation of this type of silica template, as well as its use for the production of mesoporous carbons is well known. It consists in mixing a surfactant and a silicic precursor. The surfactant is used in such concentrations that it forms cylindrical micelles. The silicic precursor will agglomerate around the cylindrical micelles before being condensed. The surfactant may be an ionic surfactant: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, for example, or nonionic: poly (oxyethylene) -poly (oxypropylene) block copolymer, for example. In general, these materials are obtained in the form of powders whose grains of micrometric granulometry show these porosities. Preferably, the formulation of the gel is such that it is possible to obtain solid films of silica. The documents "Feng et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2000, 122, 994-995 "," Lu et al. Nature, Vol 389, 1997 Zhao et al. Adv. Mater. 1998, 10, No. 16 p 1380 "and" Zhao et al. Chem. Commun., 1998, 2499-2500 describe embodiments of solid mesoporous silica films. The manufacturing method of said invention consists of the use of these formulations for the impregnation of a large open-ended conductive material, such as a paper of carbon nanotubes or carbon fibers, or a metal foam, condensation of the gel and removal of the solvent by evaporation.
This procedure leads to obtaining the macroporous material containing silica and micelles consisting of the surfactant. Two pathways can be followed for obtaining mesoporous carbon. A first route consists of removing the surfactant and replacing it with an organic material. Pyrolysis of this organic material leads to obtaining carbon retaining the shape of porosities. A second route consists of the direct pyrolysis of the surfactant which leads to the formation of carbon retaining the shape of the micelles. In both cases at the end of these steps, the silica is dissolved leaving the carbon thus formed within the pores of the initial material. In the first case, the surfactant can be removed by heating the composite in an oxidizing atmosphere such as air. This procedure leads to obtaining mesoporous silica. Silica templates are thus obtained as shown in FIG. The mesoporosities are then filled with a carbon precursor material. FIG. 1b illustrates a silica template whose pores have been filled with a precursor of carbon 2.
This material may be a polymer, for example a polystyrene, a polyacrylonitrile, or any other type of carbon polymer that may give rise to carbon formation by pyrolysis. The document "lsamu Moriguchi, Yasuhiro Koga, Ryosuke Matsukura, Yasutake Teraoka and Masaya Kodama, Chem. Commun., 2002, 1844-1845 "describes a process for the polymerization of divinylbenzene in the porosities of a mesoporous silica, as well as its use as a precursor of carbon. Alternatively, the organic material can be obtained by reaction of an organic molecule with sulfuric acid, such as a sugar such as glucose or sucrose. The document "Lixia Li, Huaihe Song, Chen Xiaohong, Microporous and Mesoporous Materials 94 (2006) 9-14" describes a method of filling porosities of a mesoporous silica with the reaction product of sucrose and sulfuric acid. , as well as its use as a precursor of carbon. At the end of this treatment, the composite is pyrolyzed in a neutral atmosphere to obtain a silica / carbon composite.
FIG. 1c illustrates a silica template filled with carbon 3 after pyrolysis of the carbon precursor 2. The dissolution of the silica, for example using a solution of sodium hydroxide or of hydrofluoric acid, leads to the formation of mesoporous carbon.
Figure 1d illustrates the carbon particles 4 obtained after chemical removal of the silica. Alternatively, the surfactant used for producing the mesoporous silica may be used as a carbon precursor. In this case, at the end of the condensation of the gel, pyrolysis in a neutral atmosphere of the material obtained leads directly to obtaining a silica / carbon composite. The silica can be dissolved at the end of this step, and the mesoporous carbon is obtained, as described in J. Kim et al. Carbon 42 (2004) 2711-2719.
Figures 2a, 2b and 2c illustrate the development of a hybrid material comprising carbon nanotubes and mesoporous carbon, according to one aspect of the invention. Figure 2a shows a buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6.
The most common method for making a carbon nanotube buckypaper 6 is to use a nonionic surfactant which improves the dispersion of the carbon nanotubes in an aqueous solution. Alternatively, the dispersion can be carried out without using a surfactant in an organic solvent, for example dimethyl formamide or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.
The dispersion is then filtered through a filter membrane by applying pressure to obtain a uniform film. The carbon nanotube paper is optionally rinsed and then dried, preferably under reduced pressure.
A precursor gel of mesoporous silica 7 is prepared: 1 g of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), 0.72 g of 0.01M hydrochloric acid and 1.5 ml of ethanol are stirred for 1 hour at 60 ° C. To this solution is added a solution of 0.4 g of poly (ethylene glycol) -block-poly (propylene glycol) -block-poly (ethylene glycol) in 3 ml of ethanol. The resulting solution is stirred for 3 hours at room temperature. The paper of carbon nanotubes is impregnated with the solution obtained and the solvent is removed by evaporation. Figure 2b shows the gel impregnated buckypaper 5, comprising a surfactant and a silica precursor. After gelation of the gel 7, there is obtained a paper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 comprising mesoporous silica whose pores are filled with surfactant. After removal of the surfactant, the pores are filled with a precursor of carbon. Figure 2c shows the buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 after pyrolysis of the carbon precursor. The open cavities 5a of the buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 are filled with mesoporous silica 8 whose pores comprise carbon 9. FIG. 2d shows the buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 after dissolution of the silica 8a with a solution of sodium hydroxide. A hybrid material 10 is thus obtained comprising carbon nanotubes 6 whose porosities are filled with mesoporous carbon 9. Alternatively, the surfactant may itself be used as a precursor for carbon.
To make a buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6, carbon nanotubes 6 are dispersed in an aqueous solution comprising a nonionic surfactant, or alternatively in an organic solvent (DMF or NMP).
The dispersion is then filtered through a filter membrane by applying pressure to obtain a uniform film shown in Figure 2a. Figure 2b shows the solution-impregnated buckypaper 5 comprising a silica precursor and a carbon precursor surfactant polymer. After gelation of the solution 7, a paper or "buckypaper" 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 comprising mesoporous silica whose pores are filled with carbon precursor surfactant.
Les cavités ouvertes 5a du buckypaper 6 de nanotubes de carbone 6 sont remplies de silice mésoporeuse dont les pores comprennent du carbone 9.Figure 2c shows the buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 after pyrolysis of the carbon precursor surfactant which fills the pores of the mesoporous silica. The open cavities 5a of the buckypaper 6 of carbon nanotubes 6 are filled with mesoporous silica whose pores comprise carbon 9.
Figure 2d shows the buckypaper 5 of carbon nanotubes 6 after dissolution of silica 8a with sodium hydroxide solution. A hybrid material 10 is thus obtained comprising carbon nanotubes 6 whose porosities are filled with mesoporous carbon.
The hybrid material retains the same apparent volume and allows an increase in the specific volume capacity of the electrode relative to an electrode comprising only carbon nanotubes, while preserving the good performance of power specific to this type of material.
Of course, this approach is generalizable to all types of electrode having good electrical conductivity, a three-dimensional structure and open porosities but which have a specific capacity defect in volume, such as metal foams for example.
