Abstract

The invention relates to a method for determining the ignition advance (14) of an engine cylinder, the method involving a step (5) of determining a raw ignition advance value (6) dependent on operating parameters of the engine (7). According to the invention, the method involves a step (8) of determining, on the basis of operating parameters of the engine (10), a limit value for ignition advance which is safe with respect to pinking (9), delineating a normal combustion zone (1) from an abnormal combustion zone in which pinking phenomena occur (4), and a step (13) of determining a final ignition advance (14) equal to the value closest to top dead centre (2) out of the bore ignition advance value (6) and the limit ignition advance value that is safe with respect to pinking (9).
