Preparing a formamide compound (I), comprises reacting an amine compound (II) with carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst and silane compound (III). Preparing a formamide compound of formula (H-C(=O)-N((R1)(R2))) (I), comprises reacting an amine compound of formula (H-N((R1)(R2))) (II) with carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst and a silane compound of formula (H-Si((R3)(R4)(R5))) (III). Either R1, R2 : H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, (hetero)aryl, heterocyclic, silyl, siloxy or amino (all optionally substituted); or R1R2+N : heterocycle (optionally substituted); and either R3-R5 : alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, silyl, siloxy, aryl, amino (all optionally substituted), H, halo or OH; or R3R4+Si : silylated heterocycle (optionally substituted).
