Abstract
Description
The invention relates to two software methods that improve object selection on a human-machine interface according to a previous invention that has been the subject of the patents INPI 04 06579 and INPI 06 02047.
Each keyboard key according to the preceding invention receives a command, a numeric character and a variable number of alphabetic characters or other symbols relating to the input (FIG. 1). The ambiguity created by the double command and alphanumeric meaning is lifted thanks to a toolbar BA which receives at all times all the active commands on the current screen. An object on the screen is said active when it has an INS selection indicator equal to one of the numeric characters of the keyboard and it will actually be activated by a typing on the key T whose numerical character is equal to this indicator. This key is called counterpart of the object because it occupies on the keyboard a position homologous to that which occupies the object on the screen, which facilitates its identification. In addition to the active objects, the screen may contain non-active but nonetheless selectable objects that will be called selectable objects. The selection of such an object can be done by moving a cursor with the direction controls, but it can be done by one of two specific methods of the interface. These methods are always exercised in a certain selection space ES, that is to say in a set of objects from which the choice of the target object will take place. They are always initialized by a keystroke on a certain TO key and consist for the first to provisionally place a selection indicator on each object of the space ES and for the second to display on the latter a selection grid. When the selection space ES merges with the entire screen, the TO key is generally the one carrying the selection command CS, represented by the symbol in the form of a mouse pointer.
The selection by the first method has in the preceding invention the following disadvantage: when the number of these objects on the screen is important, the underlying software of the interface is forced to assign the same indicator to certain objects and therefore makes it necessary to repeat the process for these objects by assigning new ones to them after they hit their peer T key. However, the placement of these new indicators can no longer benefit from the analogy of position between the indicator on the screen and its homologous key on the keyboard. The effort that is asked to the eye to identify this key is therefore penalizing. The selection of objects selectable by the second method has the following disadvantage: the eye of the user is obliged to identify both the position of the cursor which has been placed on one of the objects of the selection grid and the position of the object he wishes to select, so as to deduce the position on the keyboard of the T key that will allow him to make this selection.
This effort required by the eye has also proved to be disadvantageous. These disadvantages no longer exist in the processes described in the present invention. Their advantages will become apparent on reading the description which is given by way of illustrative and nonlimiting example, with reference to the appended figures in which: FIGS. 1 and 2 describe the principle of the first method according to the invention, FIG. 3 shows the behavior of the interface, according to the first method, after a first hit on the homologous key of one of the selectable objects of the screen, - Figures 4 and 5 describe the principle of the second method according to the invention, FIG. 6 describes a variant of the second method; FIG. 7 describes an extension of the second method; FIG. 8 describes another variant of the second method; FIGS. 11 and 12 show an example of object selection by the second method; a process in which some outer space objects of selection in the topological sense of the term are treated as interior objects in the sense of this second method.
In the first of the two methods according to the invention, the typing of the initialization key TO assigns, as in the previous invention, an INS selection flag to the selectable objects and additionally endows some of them with an IND direction indicator. An IND direction indicator is a line segment that starts from the INS indicator to which it is assigned in the direction that the finger will have to take on the keyboard for the final selection of the corresponding OS object, when the counterpart key T of the INS indicator will have been hit. Other INS indicators can be equipped with a dual INFD typing indicator that indicates that the OS object will be permanently selected by pressing the T key again. Figure 1 shows a screen with several OS selectable objects. and FIG. 2 shows the result of the typing of the TO key for initialization of the selection of these objects, which is the key where the selection command CS is written. We see in Figure 2 that each object has of course received an indicator, but to comply with the position homology rule three of them have received indicators of the same value 2. Two of these indicators have accordingly have an IND direction indicator, one to the right and the other to the left: the user therefore knows in advance that to select the object on the left he must perform the sequence of keystrokes <2 , left> and that to select the object of right it will have to carry out the sequence <2, right>. It will therefore not need, as in the method according to the previous invention, to identify a new indicator after the key is hit 2. The third value selection indicator 2 has received a dual INFD key indicator. in the form of a style different from the others (here the style Contour): it is thus this different style given to the indicator which marks that the definitive selection of the object which it designates will be obtained by a double strike of the key 2.
When the first tap of the T key has occurred, the selection indicators with a direction indicator may go gray or receive a different style which will indicate that the first step of the process has been completed. The new selection flag may also be displayed at the other end of the IND direction indicator to identify by name the key that the user must hit for the final selection of the object. A variant of the method, not incompatible with these two last provisions, is explained in Figure 3: two small cursors were placed just after the key 2 hit on the origin of the two direction indicators. These sliders will then move to the left or right to dynamically confirm the direction of the finger to permanently select the corresponding object. Finally, the Contour style will disappear, after the first keystroke, from the selection indicators that have been equipped with this double strike indicator: this return to the normal appearance of the indicator will confirm that there is still a strike to be made on the T key that has just been hit to permanently select the OS object.
The second selection method according to the present invention is implemented when the selection space ES (in which are the OS objects to be selected) occupies only partially the useful space of the screen (Figure 4). Typing the initialization key TO then causes the objects in the selection space to be treated differently depending on whether they occupy an inside or outside position (FIG. 5). The selection of the interior objects will continue indeed by a new keystroke on the TO key and this property is marked in Figure 5 by their passage highlighted. The selection of external objects will continue on the contrary by typing on a T key different from the TO key. The key T that must first be tapped the user to select an external object OS is designated by a primary direction indicator INDP from this object and gives the direction that must take the finger to reach the T key. Objects have the same INDP, each of which then receives either an INDS secondary direction indicator or a dual INFD key indicator. The INDS secondary direction indicator is attached to the primary direction indicator and gives the new direction that the finger will take after pressing the T key to permanently select the object. The INFD double strike indicator consists of two concentric circles, which indicate that the object will be selected by two keystrokes on the object's peer key; this indicator will change after the typing of the key T into a single-strike indicator having only one circle, thus marking a new typing on T is still necessary for the final selection of the object. The user clearly perceives in these conditions that the external object OS1 of FIG. 7, for example, will be selected by the succession of keystrokes <South, East>, that is to say <8.7> and that the OS2 object will be selected by double-tapping the 8 key.
The selection of the interior objects of the ES selection space will continue with a new keystroke on the TO key: these objects are preselected. Their highlighting is not essential, the absence of direction indicators and their internal position being sufficient to differentiate them from external objects. The new keystroke on the TO key will then repeat the previous process on all interior objects, thus resulting in a different treatment of objects according to whether they have become external and that they have remained interior. In a variant of this second method according to the invention, an INS selection indicator is added to the end of the INDP direction indicator of each external object (FIG. 6). In this case the secondary selection indicators do not exist or are attached to the selection indicator INS. When the objects having the same direction indicator are too small to individually receive an indicator of sufficient size to be easily and immediately perceived by the user, this indicator is collectively assigned to these objects by separating it, as in the figure. 6, direction indicators by a bar perpendicular to said indicators or by displaying any other visual guide to clearly indicate the membership of the indicator to each of the objects. In another variant, not shown, of the method, the direction indicators progressively leave the object they designate to dynamically mark the direction that the finger must take to select that object.
When the objects to be selected are very numerous, an extension of the second method according to the invention makes it possible to give access to certain objects in a number of strokes greater than two (FIG. 7). A tertiary direction indicator can then be placed if necessary behind a secondary indicator (not shown in Figure 7). An INDS secondary direction indicator may also be placed behind a double strike indicator, if necessary, to indicate that selection of the target object will be continued after this double strike by striking in the direction indicated by the indicator. The object 20 OS 1 of FIG. 7 will thus be clearly selected by a double keying of the South key (key 8), followed by a striking of the East key (key 7). Similarly a triple INFT strike indicator, consisting of three concentric circles, can be placed if necessary behind a primary direction indicator INPD to mark that the target object will be selected in three keystrokes on the corresponding key. The object OS2 of FIG. 7 will thus be selected by a triple tap of the key 25 South (key 8). The first time this key is pressed, the INFT indicator will change to a double hit INFD indicator with only two concentric circles.
The method can of course be generalized and executed in a number of strikes greater than three for certain external objects. In other words, it indicates, in a manner immediately perceptible to the user, the complete path to be followed, after the pressing of the key T0, the finger of the user to access the target external object. In the same way the number of keystrokes necessary for the selection of an object by the first method according to the invention may be greater than two.
A final variant of the second method according to the invention is described in FIG. 8. In this variant it is the outer objects themselves which move in the direction that the finger must take to continue their selection. The presence of the INDP direction indicator of each OS object is then optional, but if it exists it can be placed between this object and the fixed part of the selection space, thus marking the trace of the displacement of the object. object from its initial position to its final position. The presence of its INS selection flag is also optional, but if it exists it is placed behind the object in the direction that this object took. A succession of direction indicator and multiple keystrokes can then be attached to this INS selection indicator.
When the selectable objects that depend on the same indicator value are too numerous and small to legibly receive a succession of selection and direction indicators, the separation between interior objects and external objects will be repeated, after the striking of their homologous key , on all of these objects. FIG. 9 thus shows an ES selection space which has just been activated by the pressing of the key 5: the objects dependent on the indicator 2 are very small and very numerous. Figure 10 shows the result of pressing the 2 key: only two objects were treated as external objects and therefore received a dedicated and very readable indicator. Other objects have become new interior objects at this stage of the selection process.
An object occupying an outer position of the selection space in the topological sense of the term may be treated as an interior object in the sense of the second method according to the invention. This is the case of the OS1, OS2 objects of the selection space of FIGS. 11 and 12: the selection of objects has indeed been processed line by line and the inner line has been preselected in its entirety. The selection of OS1 and OS2 objects will therefore continue with a new keystroke on the TO key initialization. In other words, the interior objects of the selection space in the sense of the second method according to the invention are not defined according to a topological criterion, but simply as those whose selection will continue with a new typing. on the initialisation key TO, the external objects being those whose selection will continue a contrario by the striking of a different key.
