Abstract

The method involves forming a composite product composed of a core (2) in translucent material e.g. translucent resin, placed between two plates (3, 4) made of opaque material e.g. wood, so that the product has two opaque faces. The faces are machined according to symmetric patterns with respect to a mean plane of the core for constituting light passage zones, where the core has a sheet of light conductive fibers. An outer surface of the fibers is subjected to a treatment for assuring lateral diffusion of light.

Description

The invention relates to a process for producing translucent decorative panels and translucent decorative panels obtained by this method. In outdoor and indoor architecture, there is a need for panels allowing light to pass without showing the interior from the outside, unlike walls made of glass blocks, or the like. The object of the invention is to provide panels of opaque material capable of passing light.

The subject of the invention is a process for producing translucent decorative panels comprising the steps of: constituting a composite product composed of a core of translucent material disposed between two blades of opaque material, so that the composite product has two opaque faces, machining of the two faces in patterns symmetrical with respect to the average plane of the core, to form light passage zones. Advantageously, the core of the composite product is constituted by a translucent resin. According to one characteristic of the invention, each of the blades of opaque material is made of wood. Advantageously, the two blades of opaque material are made of different materials.

Preferably, the maximum depth of the machining is at least equal to the thickness of the machined blade. According to one characteristic of the invention, the core contains a layer of light-conducting fibers, said fibers being connected at one of their ends to a light source.

Advantageously, the outer surface of said fibers has been treated to ensure lateral diffusion of the light. The invention also relates to a translucent decorative panel, consisting of a translucent core disposed between two blades of opaque material, and obtained by the implementation of the aforementioned method. Other features and advantages of the invention appear from the following description given with reference to the appended drawings which represent: FIG. 1: a sectional view of a first exemplary embodiment of a translucent decorative panel according to the invention, Figure 2: a front view of an embodiment of a translucent decorative panel according to the invention, Figure 3: a simplified sectional view of a translucent decorative panel according to a second embodiment of the invention. In the remainder of the description, the translucent adjective is used in the sense: which lets light in certain places. In the figures, the translucent decorative panel 1 obtained by implementing the method according to the invention is a composite product comprising a core 2 in translucent resin, disposed between two blades 3, 4 of opaque material, for example wood. On each of the outer faces of the panel is machined, symmetrical with respect to the average plane of the core. In the example shown, the machining defines a first ellipsoidal contour 5, 5 'at the outer face of the blade 3, 4, respectively and a second ellipsoidal contour 6, 6' at the inner face of the blade 3, 4, respectively. Inside this second contour 6, the machining defines a hollow 7, 7 'in the resin. Since the machining is carried out symmetrically with respect to the mean plane of the core, the contours 5 and 5 '(6 and 6' respectively) are located opposite one another, so that at the right Hollow 7 and 7 ', the panel passes light. The machining is performed at a maximum depth at least equal to, and preferably greater than, the thickness of the blade 3, 4, so as to discover the core 2 and allow the passage of light through the panel in passing areas corresponding to the patterns. In the embodiment of FIG. 3, the core 2 comprises, in the vicinity of its mean plane, a layer 8 of light-conducting fibers connected at one of their ends to a source of light. Preferably, the fibers have undergone, on their outer surface, a treatment, for example sandblasting, so as to ensure a lateral diffusion of the light. Thus, in the absence of external light to the panel, the light source 9 provides end illumination of the fibers, and the light conveyed by the fibers is diffused laterally through the translucent resin of the core 2 to ensure a transmission of light to the right of the hollow 7, 7 'of the panel. The conductive fibers of the light are for example juxtaposed to form the web, and may be arranged on a flat support, for example a fabric, or a web.

The two blades 3, 4 of opaque material, can be made of the same material, a wood for example, but can also be made of different materials, such as a wood on one side and a metal like aluminum of the other, or such as two woods of different colors, or different species.

The ellipsoidal pattern of the machining has been described by way of non-limiting example and any other form of machining enters the protective field of the invention. The panels according to the invention can be used both as an outer housing wall and as an interior partition or furniture element.
