Abstract

The device for progressively absorbing an acceleration induced at an occupant seat of a vehicle with large wheels or a endless track, comprises panels that are preformed and assembled to deform itself progressively under the effect of crushing. The device holds in a volume between floor of the vehicle and base of the seat without exceeding the vertical balance, and is mounted retroactively in the vehicle. The device allows an adjustment of an absorption progressivity and a direction followed by the deformation at the absorption moment.

Description

1 La présente invention concerne un dispositif pour absorber tout ouThe present invention relates to a device for absorbing all or

partie de l'accélération induite a un siège de véhicule a roues ou a chenilles, conséquente a la déflagration d'une charge explosive a la verticale de laquelle se trouverait ce même véhicule.  part of the acceleration induced by a wheeled or crawler vehicle seat, consequent on the explosion of an explosive charge on the vertical of which the same vehicle would be.

The accelerations induced by this type of explosion amount to several hundred "G" and last only a few hundredths of a second. They have the main effect of causing bodily injuries often fatal to the occupants, even if no flare or fragment could penetrate the vehicle thanks to a ballistic protection set up for this purpose.

Absorption techniques of this acceleration are already known in the form of specific seat base. These techniques are currently based on principles that are: 1- Are placed directly under the seat, between the floor of the vehicle and the base of the seat. These devices do not allow a progressive deceleration to date. Commonly, these devices use elastic supports in the form of rubber pads or metal strips that will resist up to a certain value of acceleration to break or bend at once as this value is exceeded. If this technique makes it possible to return instantly to an acceleration of value "0", its effectiveness is temporary because it lasts only the time it takes to the floor of the vehicle which goes up vertically, under the effect of the thrust of the wave shock, to be again in contact with the base of the seat and this time without new device to absorb the remaining acceleration and which will be transmitted again and induced during this second contact. 2- Are composed of pneumatic devices, hydraulic or other, often taking the form of a damper or cylinder, placed behind the back of the seat on a base and a support provided for this purpose. These devices offer progressiveness but are cumbersome and can not be mounted in a vehicle if the place to house it has not been provided in the volume and architecture of the vehicle. 3- Consist not to attach the seat to the floor but to hang it on the roof or the hoop, which relativizes the induced acceleration effect without removing or gradually damping beyond the elasticity coefficient of straps. Moreover, these so-called "suspended" devices are not compatible with the European directives on safety equipment for land motor vehicles because this directive imposes on the seat of the vehicle a certain rigidity, to be immobilized during the driving and to oppose resistance and less deformation during a frontal impact of the vehicle and this under the effect of the force exerted by the inertia of the body of the occupant at the time of the frontal impact.

It is notable that often the techniques currently available also do not allow: To allow the evacuation of air under the seat. This volume of air is often trapped in the device and can not escape in a few hundredths of a second. This has the effect of hardening or distorting the deformations of some media listed above. To ensure at best a uniform vertical displacement at every point of the base of the seat at the moment of the crash.

The device according to the invention overcomes these drawbacks and failures. Its size and volume allow it to be housed in the space between the floor of the vehicle and the base of the seat without exceeding the vertical of the plumb of the seat contour. It is rigid enough to satisfy the European Directive on the elements of 45

2 safeties of motorized land vehicles and it offers a continuous and progressive deformation during all the acceleration phase induced following a shock wave. The device can also be mounted retroactively in vehicles whose architecture would not have been planned accordingly at the origin.

The device consists of several panels in the form of "zigzags" (same shape as the corrugated sheet but proportionally adapted to the function). The axes of the folds are horizontal. The panels are assembled and welded together cube-shaped without cover or bottom to form the rigid base that will interface between the floor of the vehicle and the seat. The bottom of this cube being replaced by the floor, the cover being replaced by the seat. The assembled panels are bolted to the vehicle floor and the seat is bolted to the panels. When accelerating the floor of the vehicle, it will transmit its acceleration to the seat after having gradually crushed the succession of preformed folds in the panels.

From this basic principle and depending on the absorption values sought, it is easy to adjust the deformation with the following interventions: 1- Punch holes on the folds to modify the resistance to deformation. These holes will be in progressive number per layer of folds and will allow to adjust the progressiveness of the absorption. Also, to ensure a vertical deformation at all points of the base, the mass of the occupant not being uniformly applied to the base, it will be necessary to provide more holes to the front side, area supporting the least mass, that in the rear face, area supporting the most mass. 2- In order to allow all the air to escape quickly from the volume under the seat and to regulate this evacuation to be able to possibly use the compression of this air at the end of the race to assist the absorption, one will be able to remove all or part of the front panel or leave a substantial gap between the seat base and the seat. In the latter case, the seat is mounted on its base by means of spacer length adapted to the desired seat height. 3- The progressiveness of the deformation can also be obtained by varying the thickness of the panels. A progressive thickness of the panel, from its base to its end, horizontal projection, can influence the progressivity but this form will be more expensive to achieve. The progressivity of the deformation can be obtained by varying the lengths of the straight sections between two plies. 5- The progressivity of the deformation can be obtained by varying the opening angle of the arc forming the fold.

50 Réalisation du dispositif:  The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention. Figure 1 shows an overall perspective view of a 4-panel assembly in its environment. Figure 2 shows the 4 panel mounting without its environment. Figure 3 shows the exploded elements. The upper frame with its thickness and cross shape is necessary to maintain the integrity of the assembly at the time of crushing. Figure 4 shows the shape of a sectional panel. 50 Realization of the device:

15 20 25 30 35 40 45 3 50  The panels used to make the device can be formed from a simple piece of sheet metal passed several times in a folder to give it a so-called "accordion" shape. The panels are then assembled and welded on their slices to stiffen and stabilize their structure. A band of flat iron of substantial width is added by welding all around the lower and upper openings. This strip is used to weld or bolt the device to the floor on one side and the seat on the other side. 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 3 50
