Description

The present invention relates to a device for varying the torsional stiffness of a motor vehicle anti-roll bar.
Currently, the anti-roll bar of a front or rear train of a motor vehicle is fixed to the body of the vehicle by two bearings of elastomeric material spaced longitudinally on the bar which is connected at its ends to the load-bearing members of the same axle of the vehicle.
If such an implementation of the anti-roll bar allows a good management of the anti-roll of the vehicle when the latter moves in a turn or a succession of turns, it has the disadvantage that for low deflections on a single wheel of the vehicle axle, the anti-roll bar exerts a transfer of travel to the opposite wheel, resulting in right-to-left rocking movements for a certain time of the vehicle body, causing discomfort to the driver and the passengers of the vehicle.
The present invention aims to eliminate the above disadvantage by providing a device for varying the torsional stiffness of a motor vehicle anti-roll bar fixed to the vehicle body by two bearings spaced longitudinally on the bar which is connected at its ends to the carrier elements of the same axle of the vehicle, and which is characterized in that it comprises two sleeve-shaped players connected to rotation to the anti-roll bar by splines or the like present on the portion of the bar located between the two support and controlled displacement bearings along the anti-roll bar to respectively constitute two bearings connecting the anti-roll bar to the vehicle body and selectively movable between a position substantially in the center of the bar to which the two players are close to each other so that the bar has a relatively low torsional stiffness of both sides one of the two players and a maximum position of spacing from each other of the two players on either side of the central position and to which the players are located near respectively the two support bearings of the anti bar in such a way that the latter has a high maximum torsional stiffness.
Preferably, the means for controlling the movement of the players along the anti-roll bar comprise a worm extending parallel to the anti-roll bar and fixed to the vehicle body on the one hand at its ends respectively by two bearings integral with the body and secondly at its central part by a bearing integral with the body, two sleeves forming each nut secured to a player and screwed respectively on two parts with inverted screw thread without end located on either side of the central support bearing of the worm, and drive means of the worm, such as an electric or hydraulic motor, coupled to one end of the screw endlessly and can be controlled by an onboard computer of the vehicle so as to drive the worm so that it moves the players along the anti-roll bar to a relative position determined by the stiffness desired anti-roll bar.
The invention will be better understood, and other objects, features, details and advantages thereof will appear more clearly in the explanatory description which follows, with reference to the appended schematic drawings given solely by way of example, illustrating a mode of embodiment of the invention and in which: - Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of a motor vehicle anti-roll bar provided with the device of the invention for adjusting the torsional stiffness of the anti-roll bar; cant; and FIG. 2 is a perspective view on a smaller scale of the device of FIG. 1 at a different adjustment position of the torsional stiffness of the anti-roll bar.
Referring to the figures, the reference 1 designates a motor vehicle anti-roll bar fixed to the front cradle 2 of the vehicle by two fastening means 3 spaced longitudinally on the bar 1 and each constituted by a bearing made of elastomeric material 4 in the form of a sleeve surrounding the bar 1 and fixed to the cradle 2 by a bearing support 5.
The anti-roll bar 1 has each of its ends extending by a substantially right angle bent part connected to a corresponding carrier element (not shown) of the vehicle as is known per se.
The anti-roll bar can be installed on a front train of the Pseudo Mac-Pherson type, but it is understood that it can also be applied to any other type of motor vehicle train.
According to the invention, a device is provided for varying the torsional stiffness of the anti-roll bar 1.
This device comprises two sleeve-shaped players 6 rotatably connected to the anti-roll bar 1 by splines 1b which are present on the part of the bar 1 located between the two support bearings 3 thereof, so that each of the players 6 can move in translation along the bar 1 between the two bearings 3.
The adjusting device further comprises a worm 7 extending parallel to the portion of the anti-roll bar 1 located between the two bearings 3 and which is rotatably mounted at its two ends respectively in two integral support bearings 8 the cradle 2 of the vehicle.
The worm 7 is also rotatably mounted at its central portion in a support bearing 9 integral with the cradle 2. The screw 7 has one of its two parts located between the central bearing 9 and one of the bearings end-piece 8 having a screw pitch reverse of the thread of the other part of the screw 7 situated between the central bearing and the other end bearing 8.
The device also comprises two sleeves forming nuts 10 each secured to a player 6 via a rigid connecting arm 11 fixed, for example by welding, to the player 6 and the sleeve 10. Preferably, the players 6 and the sleeves 10 are located in the same horizontal median plane.
One of the sleeves 10 is assembled on one of the parts of the worm 7 located between the central bearing 9 and one of the end bearings 8 while the other sleeve 10 is assembled on the other part the worm 7 located between the central bearing 9 and the other end bearing 8.
The device further comprises a member 12 for driving in rotation the worm 7 and which is coupled to one end of this screw. The drive member 12 may be constituted by an electric motor or a hydraulic motor.
The drive member 12 may be driven by an onboard computer of the vehicle so as to move the players 6 at a determined position on the anti-roll bar 1 corresponding to a desired torsional stiffness value thereof.
Thus, the member 12 can be controlled to move the two players 6, via the worm 7 and the sleeves 10, to a position substantially in the middle of the anti-roll bar 1 to which each part of the anti-roll bar 1 located on each side of the adjacent players 6 has a relatively low torsional stiffness. According to the indications delivered by the computer to the drive member 12, the players can be moved progressively along the anti-roll bar 1 away from each other to a determined position to reduce the length portion working in torsion of the bar located between each player 6 and the corresponding bearing 3, which has the effect of increasing the resistant torque of the anti-roll bar 1 during a wheel deflection on the half-train The calculator can therefore be programmed to progressively manage the movement of the two players 6 in a direction bringing them closer or further apart from one another so as to smooth the anti-roll stiffness curve of the bar 1.
