Abstract

The procedure for making a combustible gas from an organic material in water inside a gasification reactor (1) consists of employing a thermal plasma immersed in the water for an adequate period of time to produce the gas. The organic material can be, according to its nature, in the form of a solution, emulsion or suspension, and the gas produced can be carbon monoxide, hydrogen or a light hydrocarbon such as methane or acetylene, and the plasma is a partially ionised electrically conducting gas heated to a temperature of 3000 - 14000 degrees C. Since the walls (5, 7, 9) of the reactor chamber (3) are kept cool it can be made from a metal such as stainless steel or a polymer such as a plastic or resin-based material. The plasma arc can be transferred between two or more immersed electrodes, and it can be produced by induction or a blown plasma arc torch (11).
