Abstract

The DC-DC converter operates in a network providing 42V and 14V supplies. The network has over-voltage protection for both the converter and the low voltage part of the network. The high-voltage side uses switching transistors (T1,T2) to produce voltage transients in an inductor (L) supplied from the low-voltage side (Bf). A Zener diode (D1) and capacitor (C2) protect the low-voltage side.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

The invention relates to a reversible direct current to direct current (DC / DC) converter for a two-voltage network, a high direct voltage such as 42 volts and a lower direct voltage such as 14 volts, the network comprising means surge protection. The invention also relates to a two-voltage network comprising such a converter.

Converters of this type are known and, for example, used in vehicles fitted with a dual-voltage on-board electrical network, the voltage of 14 volts being generated by the converter.

On two-voltage networks the problem of overvoltages is even greater than in single-voltage networks because the overvoltage can come from inside the network. Indeed, if there is a short circuit between a wire under 42 volts and a wire under 14 volts, it is established on the 14 volt network an unacceptable potential in operation. Today most 14 volt boxes support 24 volts continuous and 35 volts transient in the event of an overvoltage produced during disconnection of all the load as well as the battery at the terminals of the alternator. If the boxes notice a voltage of 42 volts, they are likely to either stop working or be destroyed.

The present invention aims to provide a solution to the problem of overvoltages for two-voltage networks.

To solve this problem, the DC / DC converter according to the invention is characterized in that it is provided with components making it possible both to protect the converter and the network to which it is connected.

According to a characteristic of the invention, the converter comprises on the higher voltage side a protective switch device mounted in series in the input bus and adapted to allow a reversal of the voltage at its terminals on the high voltage side.

<Desc/Clms Page number 2> <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

According to another characteristic of the invention, the switch device comprises at least one MOSFET transistor.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the converter comprises, on the side of the lower voltage, at least one zener diode which is arranged in an anti-parallel manner between the terminals of the converter.

The invention will be better understood, and other objects, characteristics, details and advantages thereof will appear more clearly during the explanatory description which follows, made with reference to the appended schematic drawings given solely by way of example illustrating a embodiment of the invention and in which: - Figure 1 is a schematic view illustrating an embodiment of a converter according to the invention; and FIGS. 2A and 2B illustrate in top and side views respectively the location of a protection diode on the dissipator of a converter according to the invention.

Referring to the figures, the invention will be described below in its application to a direct current to direct current converter, called DC / DC, reversible, for a 42 volt / 14 volt dual voltage network.

Les transistors MOSFET sont commandés de façon à être alternativement conducteurs par application d'une tension de commande à leur électrode de grille a et produire ainsi une tension découpée sur l'inductance L. Cette inductance L est montée entre le point de jonction P des  As shown in FIG. 1, such a converter designated by the general reference 1 essentially comprises, in a manner known per se, on the 42-volt side two switches formed by MOSFET transistors T1, T2, of the N channel type, which are connected in series between the terminal Bh of the potential 42 volts and the ground 0 and to which is mounted in parallel a capacitor Cl. The MOSFET transistors are controlled so as to be alternately conductive by applying a control voltage to their gate electrode a and thus producing a voltage cut on the inductor L. This inductor L is mounted between the junction point P of the

Between this terminal B and earth 0 is mounted a capacitor C2. This structure and its operation are known and therefore do not need to be described in more detail.

In accordance with the invention a mosfet transistor T3 is mounted in the 42 volt voltage side input bus between the terminal Bh and the series connection of the two transistors Tl, T2. The MOSFET T3 is controlled to open or close by a control potential applied to its gate electrode a and therefore acts as a switch.

On the side of the lower voltage 14 volts, that is to say between the terminal Bf and the ground is disposed a clipper zener diode Dl mounted in anti-parallel.

Concerning the operation of the converter according to the invention, the N-channel MOSFET T3 transistor allows, by application to its control electrode a of a blocking signal in order to block the current if the polarity of the battery is reversed. The addition of the transistor T3 makes it possible to carry out the protection function without losing the benefit of the reversibility of the converter. The MOSFET transistor has the additional advantage of having a low equivalent resistance and therefore of minimizing the efficiency losses of the converter in the electrical energy production chain. Furthermore and in order to optimize the cost of said MOSFET transistors, insofar as these switches are only used statically in the system in the event of handling error, components whose breakdown voltage is located just at - beyond the battery voltage, that is 36 volts. It is possible to use components specified at 35 volts, which reduces their cost and their internal resistance in conduction.

Dans l'exemple représenté le dispositif interrupteur de protection ne comporte qu'un seul  In the example shown the protection switch device has only one

transistor MOSFET T3. MOSFET transistor T3. It is however possible to use several transistors which will then be mounted in parallel. In some cases, it will be possible to replace the MOSFET transistors with relays, which are less expensive components with limits of use, particularly in terms of temperature.

On the 14-volt side of the converter, the zener diode Dl allows the protection functions of the converter and the 14-volt network to be combined. We could also use several zener diodes. Regarding the function of the zener diode (s) Dl, if for any reason a short circuit occurs between the 14 volt and 42 volt network parts, the diode enters an avalanche and makes it possible to protect the 14 volt network part and blow the head fuse on the 42 volt network part. This therefore makes it possible both to limit the voltage on the part of the 14 volt network to 35 volts max and to blow the fuses faster on the 42 volt side to ensure disconnection. The limiting voltage at the output of the converter also makes it possible to use output capacitors whose voltage resistance is limited to 25 volts continuous and 35 volts transient.

In the event of the battery connection being reversed, two scenarios may occur. Either the network is equipped with a battery disconnection box which validates the connection only if the battery is connected at the location, or the output diode turns on when the battery is connected and blows a head fuse of the network. Again the network and the converter are protected.

Regarding the zener diode (s) Dl, a component of choice for performing their function is the rectifier diode for the alternator. This component is indeed sized to hold the load drops called LOAD DUMP from the alternator. This diode dissipates energy in an avalanche, which is essential for this function.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5> <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

FIGS. 2A and 2B show an advantageous example of placing the diode on the converter so that it can dissipate this energy in an avalanche. The figures show the heatsink 2, for example made of aluminum, of the converter, with its cooling fins 3.

The clipping diode D1 is fitted into the dissipator, in its base 4, at 5. The base of the diode is connected to ground, that is to say to the dissipator. The diode connection is fixed by electrical soldering or soldering on the bus bar or the converter printed circuit. This configuration makes it possible to integrate the diode with a minimum of change on the dissipator.

In this position, the diode is cooled and can perfectly resist the stresses which it is asked to resist.

Still concerning the protection of the converter on the low voltage side 14 volts, it is possible to also use MOSFET transistors, as on the side 42 volts.

However, on the 14 volt side, the current is three times higher, which would then require the use of three times more MOSFET transistors, with an impact on the performance also three times greater.

This would produce unacceptable additional costs for a function which corresponds to a mode which occurs only very punctually and resulting from improper use of the system.
