Abstract

Instrument for measuring the degree of patient discomfort during urinating comprises a rigid longitudinal support (1) and a transparent plastic cursor (2) with a vertical cursor marking (3). The ends of the support comprise raised corners (4) that act as a stop for the cursor. The device is used by a practitioner asking a patient to indicate the degree of discomfort during urinating by moving the cursor along the scale. The practitioner notes down a corresponding number on the reverse side of the scale.

The present invention relates to an instrument for measuring the intensity of voiding symptoms. be numerous urinary pathologies and in particular benign enlargement of the prostate require quantitative and precise measurement of symptoms.

This measure is also used for monitoring pathologies and serves as the main criterion in the evaluation of new therapies for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

To assess these symptoms, the doctor currently only has questionnaires of complex use allowing him to obtain a score which quantitatively and objectively assesses the patient's voiding symptoms.

The use of these questionnaires is made difficult in current practice for 2 reasons: - The most often used questionnaire refers to the last month past preventing the calculation of symptoms in this time interval - Self-questionnaires are difficult for patients to fill out .

They are therefore filled out frequently by the doctor, thus leading to an interpretation bias.

The device according to the invention makes it possible to remedy these drawbacks, by quantifying the voiding symptoms on a visual scale using a cursor.

The accompanying drawings illustrate one of the embodiments of the invention: - Figure 1 shows a view of the front of the measuring instrument.

- Figure 2 shows a view of the back of this instrument.

With reference to these drawings, the measuring instrument is composed of a long, rigid support (1) and a transparent plastic cursor (2) on which a vertical line (3) is drawn. The material used for the elongate support may be paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, metal or any other rigid material. The 2 ends of the support are rounded in the corners (4) and include a notch (5) serving as a stop for the cursor. On the front of the instrument, a horizontal colored strip (6) is drawn.

At each end is noted: - Left: no problem urinating.

- À droite : problèmes pour uriner extrêmement importants .  - Right: extremely important problems with urination.

On the back, a scale of 0 Ci 35 is printed opposite the colored strip on the front. A green coloration (7) is printed on the graduations 0 to 7, an orange coloration (8) is printed on the graduations 8 to 18, and a red coloration (9) is printed on the graduations 19 to 35. At the level of the he left end of this recto is inscribed: measurement of the intensity of voiding symptoms by visual scale.

The practitioner uses the instrument as follows:
He presents the front of the instrument facing the patient and asks him a question about his voiding symptoms.

The patient moves the cursor himself along the colored strip between the 2 ends depending on the intensity of his symptoms.

The practitioner immediately reads the number corresponding to the cursor, thus quantitatively and objectively noting the intensity of the patient's voiding symptoms.

He can use the instrument at each consultation, in treated or untreated patients and thus objectively follow the development of each patient's symptoms
