Abstract

Self-assembled candles made by charging gelatinous particles of a candle making material round a vertically aligned wick in a suitable glass vessel, the wick having dimensions such that the heat evolved by burning melts the particles in a defined limited zone round the wick. Procedure for making ornamental candles from a candle-making kit comprises charging small pieces (1) of an optionally colored candle-making material with a gelatinous consistency into a glass or similar container (2) which contains one or more vertically aligned wicks (3), the dimensions of the wick (3) being selected such that the thermal radiation from the flame (4) produced upon igniting the wick causes melting (5) of the small particles of gelatinous material in a defined limited zone (6) round the wick.

Description

Lighting candle manufacturing process, and made according to this

process.

  The present invention relates to a method for making lighting candles such as, more particularly advantageously, ornamental candles. It also targets

  candles obtained by the implementation of this process.

  Until recent years, lighting candles were exclusively made at

  using beeswax, or paraffin, or stearin or mixtures of these substances.

  In the artisanal field of decorative candles or decorative candles, three manufacturing methods are commonly used by manufacturers or buyers of candle-making kits: - by melting the lighting material in a container and pouring the liquid material resulting from this fusion in a container or in a mold in the center of which is placed and maintained one or more wicks; - by successive soaking of the wick (s) in the liquid illuminating substance previously melted in a double boiler;

  - by winding a sheet of embossed wax around one or more wicks.

  The first two methods require the melting of the illuminating substance (beeswax, paraffin or stearin), which implies the possibility of accidental overturning of the container containing the molten material in the liquid state and, consequently, the risk of burns. serious. The third method has the disadvantage of only making candles of uniform appearance and therefore does not lend itself to making ornamental candles with a large

variety of colors.

  Recently, new illuminants have appeared on the market for making candles. These illuminating materials having a gelatinous consistency, consist of a

  assembly of noble petroleum materials, solidified oils and polymers.

  They liquefy on heating, are initially transparent and can be made translucent; they are easily colored and perfumed by adding color pigments

  or essential oils, respectively.

  Candles made using these new illuminants have the advantage of burning two to three times less quickly than candles based on beeswax, paraffin,

  stearin, mixtures of these materials.

For example:

  - In document WO 97/08282 A are described candles in transparent gel containing a hydrocarbon oil, a wick and one or more copolymers with three blocks, with radial block or with several blocks of a thermoplastic rubber and, optionally, a copolymer two blocks. - In document EP 0 685 554 A are described solid candles comprising a composition comprising at least one oil and a gelatinization composition consisting of at least one gelatinization agent having 15 or more carbon atoms, chosen from the group of fatty acids and fatty acid derivatives in a concentration of between 0.3 and 50% by weight, sufficient to gelatinize the oil at least present. - In document WO 96/34077 is described a translucent candle composed of a gel comprising a mineral oil containing mixtures of diblock and triblock copolymers with

  based on synthetic thermoplastic rubbers.

  These new illuminating substances appear in the form of a transparent or translucent body, of gelatinous consistency which, at room temperature is sufficiently solidified to stand alone. However, it is generally supplied in a glass or other transparent container, the other method consists in cutting this gelatinous material but only allows

  agglomerate in a container of small pieces without any patterns, models, designs and shapes.

  The main control method used for the artisanal manufacture of ornamental candles using these new illuminating substances corresponds to the fusion method used for making decorative candles using beeswax, paraffin or stearin, so that it presents the same dangers of accidental spillage of the molten material when it is

found in a liquid state.

  The object of the invention is in particular to propose a new artisanal method of making ornamental candles to be assembled in a kit by the user, by means of an illuminating material of gelatinous consistency, transparent or translucent, colored or not, in a single color. ,

degraded, mottled, multicolored.

  According to the invention, this objective is achieved by bringing together the elements (1), obtained by a molding process making it possible to obtain drawings, different patterns, of width, length, thickness ranging from 0.5 to 10 cm. in illuminating material of gelatinous consistency or reversible gel in a container such as a glass or similar container (2), in which one or more wicks (3) are arranged in a vertical position proportional to the diameter of the container and in that the dimensions are chosen so that when the desired level of elements of illuminating material is reached, the thermal radiation of the flame (4) after lighting the wick, causes the melting (5) of the elements of gelatinous material in a certain limited area

(6) around the wick.

  It is understood that the implementation of this process does not involve any manipulation of

  hot liquid product, so that making candles poses no risk of burns.

  The illuminating substance of gelatinous consistency or reversible gel which can be used for the implementation of this process preferably consists of a known assembly of noble petroleum materials, vegetable oils, solidified oils and polymers. It can be constituted

  by one of the materials described in the three aforementioned documents.

  For the implementation of the method of the invention, it suffices to bring together the elements of

  drawings, of different patterns in gelatinous material in a container.

  The container can be made of transparent or translucent glass or any other material having a melting point very much higher than the melting point of the illuminating material such as for example a plastic, rigid and transparent material meeting this

  condition, in other words the material must not be at a low melting point.

  Small decorative objects can be placed in inclusions in the elements molded of gelatinous illuminating material, so that said elements are illuminated by the light radiation of the flame. However, these inclusions must be made of a material having

  a much higher melting temperature than that of the illuminant.

  The molded elements made of gelatinous illuminating material can be packaged and

  packed in the manufacturing mold.

  The wicks used for the implementation of the invention can be wicks

  cotton braided classics, whether or not armed with a waxed or uncoated tin thread; they can be pre-

  impregnated with a substance identical to that which constitutes the illuminating material.

  I Method for making lighting candles to be assembled as a kit by the user, such as, for example, decorative candles, characterized in that elements (1) of a gelatinous consistency are tinted or not in a container such as a glass or similar container (2) in which one or more wicks (3) are arranged in a vertical position and in that the dimensions are chosen so that when the desired level of elements of illuminating material is reached, the thermal radiation of the flame (4) after lighting the wick causes the small elements of   gelatinous matter in a certain limited area (6) around the wick.   2 A method of making candles, according to claim 1, characterized in that one uses a transparent or diaphanous illuminating material of gelatinous consistency consisting of an assembly of noble petroleum materials, vegetable oils, oils solidified and polymers.   3 Method for making lighting candles according to one of claims I or 2,   characterized in that the transparent or diaphanous illuminating material of gelatinous consistency and transformed by molding process making it possible to obtain drawings,   different patterns of width, length and thickness ranging from 0.5 cm to 10 cm.   4 A method of making lighting candles and ornaments according to one of claims 1   to 3, characterized in that the diameter of the wick is proportional to the diameter of the container.   5 A method of making lighting candles and ornaments according to one of claims   I to 4 characterized in that small decorative objects are placed in inclusions in the elements molded in gelatinous illuminating material so that the said elements are   illuminated by the luminous radiation of the flame.   6 A method of making lighting candles and ornaments according to one of claims   from I to 5 characterized in that the elements made of illuminating gelatinous material are   packaged and packed in the manufacturing mold.   7 Lighting candles such as, for example, decorative candles, characterized in that they are obtained by implementing the method according to any one of claims I to 6.
