Abstract

The reader has six circular concentric supports (1-6) which can rotate around a central axis (12). This assures their cohesion and fixing on an external support separated by equidistant segments are yin-yang traits following a given precise order. On the exterior support of the concentric supports, there is a triangular fixed marking with which the circular supports can be aligned. This allows reading of the hexagram at the level of a guide mark.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for quickly and easily drawing a hexagram of the Yi King, guaranteeing equal probabilities of exit from each of the 64 possible hexagrams with their possible mutable lines.

A hexagram of the Yi King is composed of six levels1 made up of two kinds of lines, some of which are continuous (Yang), while the others are discontinuous (~~ Yin). They can be stable or, on the contrary, mutable, and in this case transform into their opposite and give birth to a new hexagram.

The drawing of a hexagram is traditionally carried out by the manipulation of 50 yarrow stems, which are divided into two piles randomly. We remove a first rod from the right pile which we place between the little finger and the ring finger. Stems are then removed in groups of four until there are only a total of four or fewer stems to be placed between the ring finger and the middle finger. We do the same with the second pile, the rest, less than or equal to four, is placed between the middle finger and the index finger. The total of the rods thus held between the fingers will be added and depending on the number obtained, we will note a yin line or a stable or mutable yang1 line, for the first level of the hexagram.

This manipulation must be carried out six times to determine each of the six levels of the hexagram. The same is true when using a more recent method which consists in throwing three coins. We assign a certain value to the coins that fall on the stack side and another to those that fall on the front side.

The addition of these values for the three coins makes it possible to determine the nature of the lines as in the traditional drawing.

These procedures are lengthy and can cause transcription errors.

The device according to the invention overcomes these drawbacks, the total draw being carried out in a single operation. The device allows direct reading of the hexagram with its mutable lines without calculations or transcription.

Indeed, six concentric circular supports, of different diameters, each carrying on its circumference a sequence of sixteen yin or yang lines, stable or mutable, separated by equidistant segments and arranged in a precise alternation, guarantee each of the 64 hexagrams of the Yi King an equal chance of exit from manipulation. In total 2 power 6 combinations are possible (a yin or yang line at each of the six levels), or 64 different hexagrams.

The hexagram is obtained by manipulation of the six circular supports which rotate 360 "around a central axis. After aligning a segment of each of the six circular supports on a fixed triangular marker, located on a support outside the periphery from the largest circular support, we read the hexagram to consult at a reading mark.

The central axis is formed by a rivet which ensures the cohesion of all the elements and maintains them on a support carrying the triangular mark and the reading mark on the periphery of the largest disc, -the six discs can be embedded in a double-disc, the upper face of which represents the symbol of the Tao is provided with a reading window, the lower face bearing the triangular mark.

Referring to Figure 7, the device comprises six superimposed concentric discs (1,2,3,4,5,6), of respective diameter 6,7,8,9,10 and 11 cm, which can be produced in various materials (paper, PVC, plastic ...), each provided with a series of sixteen lines arranged in a precise order described below, eight yin lines and eight yang lines, two of which are mutable each time.

The mutable lines are shown on the boards in hollow lines (yin o = p), (7), yang = (8)), the stable lines in solid lines (yin 1 (9), yang ~ (10)).

The lines are separated from each other by equidistant segments (11). A rivet (12) ensures the cohesion of the six discs (1,2,3,4,5,6) and their maintenance on a support.

The user is invited to rotate the six discs in the direction that suits him, then at a time chosen by him, to align a segment (11) of each disc on the tip of the triangular marker (14). It will then read the hexagram drawn at a reading mark (15).

In the embodiment according to FIG. 8, the six discs (1,2,3,4,5,6) are encased in a double disc (16), a rivet (12) ensuring the cohesion of the assembly and the mobility of the discs around its axis. A triangular mark (14) appears on the edge of the lower internal face of the double-disc, the upper face being provided with a reading window (17), in which the hexagram appears after alignment of one of the segments (11 ) of each of the six discs on the triangular mark (14). A numbering from 1 to 6 on the left and on the right of the window (17) allows the user to locate easily to identify the hexagram and consult the mutable lines (7,8).

In the embodiment according to Figure 11, the device comprises six flat rings (18,19,20,21, 22,23), concentric, movable around a central axis (24) integral with a support (25) . On this support and at the periphery of the largest ring are the triangular mark (14) and the reading mark (15).
