Abstract

The front face of the inflatable safety bag is located towards the vehicle driver and the rear face (3) is attached to the casing containing the gas generator. The stitching (4,5) which assembles the front and rear faces of the inflatable bag are joined together at an intersection (6,6'). The geometric disposition of the stitching at the intersection is such that there is no overlaying of the stitching which avoids weakness in this zone. The ends (7,9) of the stitching (4) are placed on the outside of the closed surface created by this stitching. They are thus placed in an unconstrained zone during inflation of the bag. The same occurs with the ends (8,10) of the stitching (5). The ends of the stitching are terminated by stitching edges placed outside the closed surface created by the stitches.

Description

The present invention relates to an inflatable retaining bag for a motor vehicle, intended to be associated with a gas generator and housed in the vehicle so as, in the event of an impact, to be automatically and instantly inflated by pressurized gas to constitute a cushion protecting the face and chest, or other part of the body, of transported users.

The object of the invention relates more particularly to the assembly by sewing of the front and rear faces for such inflatable retaining bags made flat, and / or to the assembly of elements forming panels for such retaining bags three-dimensional inflatables. To facilitate the presentation, such faces and panels will be designated here by the term "elements".

Usually such elements, on the air bags, are joined by seams. It is noted that the assembled elements forming defined geometric surfaces, their periphery is always assembled by seams forming closed trajectories, and / or by joining portions of seam. It is easily understood that to guarantee the sealing of the inflatable retaining bag, as well as the continuity of the seams with respect to the stresses, it is necessary to link the two ends of the seams when they close on themselves, or the junctions of the different seams, when portions of seams meet.

Similarly, it is necessary to immobilize the threads on the first and last stitches of each sewing portion, so as to prevent the untapping of the seams by their ends, which is generally designated by the term "sewing stops" .

Such connections are usually made by seam overlaps. These seam overlaps, however, have the drawback of generating local areas where the density of stitches per length of seam is greater than that given by the sewing pitch chosen, being able to go up to double, which weakens the assembled elements and creates preferential tear start zones.

Another drawback lies in the fact that the sewing stops are in areas subjected to stresses when the inflatable retaining bag is inflated, which is a cause of destruction of the seams.

The object of the present invention is to remedy the drawbacks mentioned above of known inflatable retaining bags in which the assembly seams are closed on themselves, or linked together, by covers.

According to the invention, the method of closing or joining a seam for assembling faces or panels for an inflatable retaining bag is characterized in that at the point of closure or joining, the seam takes a trajectory which crosses its previous path or the path of the seam it joins.

In this way, there is no seam overlap, which avoids areas where the density of stitches per length of seam would be higher than elsewhere and would then weaken the assembled elements.

On the other hand, on such assemblies, the seam lengths intended to make sewing stops are located outside the zone of the bag which is under stress during inflation thereof, which avoids a cause of destruction of the stitching. It is possible, in this way, to make sewing stops if necessary by backing up or going back and forth on the start and end of sewing, without for this placing excessive concentrations of stitching in parts of wall subjected to stresses.

To clearly understand the invention, a preferred embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the appended schematic drawing in which
Figure 1 is a plan view of an inflatable retaining bag, provided with seams according to the invention, shown flat
Figure 2 is a vertical section, taken along line II-II of Figure 1, of the retaining bag shown in the inflated state, particularly showing the assembled faces; and
Figure 3 is a detail view of Figure 1, showing more particularly the trajectories of the seams at their crossing and their stop.

With reference to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, a safety bag has been shown at 1, shown in the deflated position flat in FIGS. 1 and 3, and inflated in FIG. 2.

The bag 1 is made of waterproof flexible coated fabric, and it has a front face 2, arranged towards the driver of the vehicle (not shown), and a rear face 3, attached to the housing (not shown) containing the bag and the generator. gas.

As seen in Figure 2, the faces 2 and 3 are joined by seams 4 and 5. As it appears in Figure 1, the seams 4 and 5 are joined on themselves by a crossing 6, 6 '.

As can be seen in more detail in FIG. 3, the geometrical arrangement of the seams at the crossing 6, 6 ′ means that there is no overlap of each of the seams 4 and 5, which prevents embrittlement of this zone. On the other hand, the ends 7 and 9 of the seam 4 are placed on the outside of the closed surface created by this seam, which has the advantage of placing them in an unstressed area during inflation of the bag. It is the same for the ends 8 and 10 of the seam 5.

Advantageously, the ends 7, 8, 9, 10 of the seams 4 and 5 can be terminated by sewing stops (not shown) which are not embrittling, being placed outside the closed surface created by the seams 4 and 5, and therefore in an unconstrained area during inflation of the bag.

It will be understood that the above description has been given by way of example, without limitation, and that additions or constructive modifications could be made without departing from the scope of the invention. It will be understood in particular that the method according to the invention applies to lockstitch seams, chainstitch seams or any other suitable stitch.
