Abstract

The automatic activation system combines electromechanical and an electronic devices to detect rapid deceleration and to control operation of emergency warning lights and third brake light. An adjustable inertial detector (7) has a mass (9) suspended from a flat spring (8). Heavy braking causes the spring to bend over to a fixed contact (13), closing the input circuit to the electronic control unit (3). The electronic controller operates the warning lamp circuits, and includes a flashing relay to operate the third stop lamp. An adjustable timer (4) keeps the warning lights operational for a set time, then de-activates them unless the driver operates the normal manual switch (20) to keep the emergency lights operating.
