Abstract

Soil is stabilised by penetrating into the surface layer of the soil a copolymer of propenamide, C3H5NO, and of propenoic acid, C3H4O2, dispersed sufficiently to form with the fine elements of the soil a stable, permeable structure.

Description

ANTI-EROSIVE SOIL STABILIZER
The present invention relates to a soil stabilization process making it possible to limit erosion due to runoff and wind while retaining their permeability to said soils.

This process is particularly intended for work on reconditioning; these works, which follow earthworks such as construction of motorways, railways or the like, are intended to stabilize the artificial relief created by man to form a mound, earth dune, etc. to preserve it from erosion due to elements such as wind and rain. Indeed, these reliefs made up of fresh earth are particularly sensitive to winds and stormy rains, the runoff of which can quickly gully the bare earth, devoid of any soil-fixing plants. But this method can also be used to fix sand dunes, for example, on beaches or even in the desert.

Indeed, these very fragile dunes are generally kept in shape by plants which provide their internal structure. However, these plants are increasingly threatened by beach pollution as well as by the devastating effects of walkers; moreover, while it is very easy to re-form sand dunes mechanically, it is certainly much more difficult to stabilize them in the long term while allowing recovery by plants.

It is this double objective that it is proposed, among other things, to achieve by means of the method according to the invention.

Until now, the method generally used to stabilize freshly shaped soils has consisted of spreading a solution heavily loaded with a colloidal product at the rate of several hundred kilograms per hectare. I1 then forms on the surface of the ground a layer of consolidating product which protects the ground from bad weather, that is to say from wind and runoff.

The colloidal product does not penetrate deep into the ground, but on the contrary remains on the surface and creates a kind of almost impermeable skin. This impermeability, if it avoids entrainment of the soil by runoff, does not allow water to penetrate inside the soil and therefore does not facilitate revegetation of the soil. However, in the long term, the only real method of stabilizing a soil consists in favoring the development of a vegetation which will fix it in depth thanks to its multiple roots.

The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks by providing a process for stabilizing the soil, characterized in that it consists in penetrating into the surface layer of the soil to be stabilized, a copolymer of propenamide and propenoic acid, in a sufficiently concentrated concentration. weak so that it does not have an impermeable character. Indeed, it has been found that this copolymer, when used at a very low dose, allows stabilization of the soil by cohesion of the fine elements constituting this soil, while retaining the permeable character.

Various embodiments of the present invention will be described below, by way of non-limiting example.

A copolymer of propenamide and propenoic acid has the remarkable property when mixed with soil at a sufficiently low concentration to participate in the very structure of the soil. Indeed, it creates with the fine elements constituting this soil, a true three-dimensional structure. In fact, unlike conventional methods which are content to create a surface layer forming a kind of support net, the method according to the invention aims to give a structure to the soil to be treated, the copolymer in the dispersed state then playing the role of cement. The mechanical properties are not limited to a surface layer enveloping the loose soil. On the contrary, the entire surface layer, the thickness of which can vary from 0.5 cm to 3 cm, which sees its internal cohesion increase. It seems that this increase in cohesion can be attributed to the three-dimensional character conferred on the copolymer by the polymerization at the level of the amine function.

According to a particularly advantageous characteristic of the process according to the invention, the very low concentration of copolymer makes it possible to conserve all of its permeability in the soil.

This maintained permeability has two important advantages: first, the water which penetrates inside the soil will actively participate in the development of the vegetation which will conquer the soil to be stabilized by providing it with the nutrients it needs .

However, in the long term, it is this vegetation which alone is capable of ensuring the lasting stabilization of this soil. In addition, the fact that rainwater penetrates the soil to be treated limits the phenomena of runoff and therefore gullying, in particular during heavy rains such as thunderstorms. In addition, the very low concentration of product used makes it possible to limit pollution factors as much as possible and obviously the cost of treatment. A preferred way of implementing the process consists in spreading the product diluted in water at the rate of 5,000 to 15,000 liters per hectare treated. The recommended dosage varies between 3 and 10 kilos of copolymer, propenamide and propenoic acid per hectare. Obviously, it is quite possible and desirable to add adjuvants to the solution which will increase and accelerate the recovery of the soil to be treated by plants. They can be seeds, amendments, or micro-organisms. Finally, it is very clear that any other method which would consist in impregnating the soil with the copolymer in a manner other than by diluting it in a solution to be spread would not go beyond the scope of the invention.
