Abstract

A number of layers (1) of resistant material form a base substrate, on top of which are laid a series of other layers including a first screening layer (2). The screen is covered by an opaque layer (3) and a sheet of transparent material (4).Thin pieces (5) of decorative or other material may be laid onto the transparent sheet, and covered by a second transparent sheet (6) which defines an envelope in cooperation with the first transparent sheet. The whole assembly is then subjected to heat and pressure, so that phenolic or other resins contained in at least the substrate layers are fused and polymerised to create a rigid composite structure.

Description

The invention relates to a new process for producing laminated panels intended to present, on their visible side, an xarqueterie effect while retaining a decorative background which may correspond to various species of wood or other materials usually used for panels. laminates.

According to the invention, the marquetry effect is obtained without resulting in any deterioration of the finish of the surface seen from the panel and without the resistance of the latter to the various stresses which it may undergo being affected.

According to the invention, the method for producing laminated panels with marquetry effect is characterized in that a first laminating of resistant sheets is carried out, in that said sheets are covered with a layer forming a screen, this screen being itself covered by a veneer on which is extended a first transparent sheet forming one side of an envelope receiving pieces of thin inlays covered by a covering sheet forming the second side of the envelope, the whole laminates ci above, being subjected to pressure and to heating to ensure the bonding by melting and at least partial polymerization of the resins constituting or impregnating the stratification layers.

According to other features of the invention
a - the laminated sheets ensuring the resistance of the panel are impregnated with a phenolic resin
b - the laminated sheets ensuring resistance consist of sheets of kraft paper, preferably by four superimposed sheets; and
c - the screen-forming sheet consists of a sheet of paper also impregnated with resin.

Various other characteristics of the invention will also emerge from the detailed description which follows.

Embodiments of the object of the invention are shown, by way of non-limiting examples, in the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 is a schematic section illustrating the main components of a multi-layer laminated panel according to the invention.

Figs. 2 and 3 are plans illustrating the upper face of laminated panels obtained in accordance with the invention.

1 comporte des couches successives assurant des fonctions particulières. The panel illustrated in section in fig. 1 comprises successive layers ensuring particular functions.

A first stratification consists of superimposed sheets 1 of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin or the like.

I1 is advantageous to achieve a rigid panel to use, as illustrated, four sheets of impregnated kraft paper. For embodiments in which the panel must be able to be bent or otherwise formed along a developable curve, the number of sheets of kraft paper 1 can be lower, for example only three sheets can be used.

The sheets 1 which constitute the resistant side not seen from the panel are covered by a layer 2 forming a screen which is constituted by a sheet of paper impregnated with resin. The sheet 2 forming a screen is itself covered by a veneer 3 advantageously constituted by sheets of wood, preferably of sliced wood, the thickness of which can vary according to the quality to be given to the panel and also according to the species of wood. used.

The veneer sheet 3 is covered by a plastic sheet 4, preferably a sheet of tricyanamide also known as melamine. Other transparent materials can be used. The sheet 4 above is intended to form one of the sides of an envelope for inlays 5. The sheet 3 is of small thickness, of the order of l / lOth of a millimeter so as not to obscure the appearance of the veneer sheet 3. Given the small thickness of the sheet 4, the inlays 5 are advantageously made from cut paper or from thin metal sheets whose thickness is between 1 / 5th and 1 / 100th of a millimeter. When the inlays 5 are put in place, a transparent cover sheet 6 is spread over the sheet 4. In the same way as the sheet 4, the sheet 6 is made of laminate or similar materials and its thickness is the same or at least of the same order as that of sheet 4 with which it constitutes an envelope.

The laminated panel achieves as explained in the above is placed between the plates of a heating press. The plates are then tightened to exert a pressure on the panel of the order of 40 bars and at the same time, the panel is brought to a temperature of the order of 120 μl for approximately 40 to 50 minutes to ensure melting and cooking. or polymerization of the impregnation resins described in the foregoing.

The pressure heating of the laminated panel has the effect that the inlays 5 are printed in the thickness of the sheets 4 and 6 of melanin, sheets which remain perfectly transparent so that the inlays 5 appear seen directly and give the panel an aspect of marquetry, which is illustrated in figs. 2 and 3.

3. The plasticity, which is imparted to the sheets 4 and 6 during pressure cooking, allows the use of inlays 5 partially overlapping each other as illustrated in 5a in fig. 3.

Since the inlays 5 penetrate into the thickness of the transparent sheets 4 and 6, this results in very slight variations in the diffraction of the light rays passing through the cover sheet 6 in the vicinity of the edge of the inlays, which gives an impression of re lief specific to marquetry.

After cooling, the panels produced can be used in a wide variety of applications, for example for covering doors, for making cupboards, table tops, etc.

The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments, shown and described in detail, since various modifications can be made without departing from its scope.
