Abstract

Disclosed is an aerosol dispensable shaving cream composition having improved foam quality, improved lubricity and valuable skin conditioning properties. The composition comprises an aqueous composition containing a soap, such as triethanolamine stearate, and a long chain linear alkyl alcohol having an average of at least 24 carbon atoms. The composition may additionally contain long-chain linear ethoxylated alcohols having an average number of carbon atoms of at least 24, not including the carbon atoms of ethoxy groups, or long-chain polydimethylsiloxanes having kinematic viscosity. average of about 12,500 to 100,000 mm2 / s. Description

The present invention relates to a shaving cream to be dispensed in an aerosol,

  The U.S. Patent No. 3,298,919 proposes a shaving cream containing polysiloxanes. The U.S. Patent No. 5,008,103 specifically relates to a silicone surfactant and U.S. No. 3,819,524 relates to a

  cosmetic composition for thermal distribution.

  The present invention relates to an aerosol shaving cream that is characterized by improved foam quality, improved lubricity, and substantial skin conditioning properties, comprising an aqueous composition containing a fatty acid soap and a long chain linear alkyl alcohol having an average of at least 24 carbon atoms as basic ingredients. The characteristics of the composition can be improved by the incorporation of a long-chain polydimethylsiloxane or an "ethoxylated" alcohol

  long-chain lates having about 10 to 18 carbon atoms inclusive.

  Another surfactant of the preferred composition is a sulfate detergent, preferably sodium lauryl sulfate. The sulfate is present in a proportion of about 0.2 to 2.0% by weight, preferably about 0.3 to 1.0% by weight of the composition. Other suitable sulphate detergents include the sulphates in which the aliphatic group, preferably

  alkyl, has about 10 to 18 carbon atoms inclusive.

Such compounds characterized by an average carbon chain length of C24 are available from Petrolite under the designation Unithox, these products being derived from Unilin (Unithox 350, range of about C18 to C30); or a length

  chain average of C30 (Unithox 420, 450 or 480;

  C20 to C40 range) or C40 (Unithox 520, 550, range of about C30 to C50). The degree of ethoxylation is on average about 2 to 40 ethoxy groups per molecule of alcohol,

  preferably from about 4 to 15 ethoxy groups.

  The composition can be improved by the addition of a fourth component, if desired. The polydimethylsiloxane component is present in an amount of about 1 to 10 percent, preferably about 2 to 6 percent of the composition. These polymers are substantially linear and have kinematic viscosities of about 12,500 to 100,000 mm / sec, preferably 30,000 to 60,000 mm / sec. Examples of suitable polymers include dimethicones, available from Union Carbide, General Electric and Dow Corning. The composition may also contain a fragrance,

  one or more emollients and other additives known in general for their utility in a shaving cream.

  Typical optional ingredients include

  free fatty acids such as stearic acid, for example.

  When present, these acids constitute about 0.1 to 5 percent, preferably about 1 to 3 percent of the composition. The compositions may also contain ingredients such as lauryl alcohol polyethylene glycol ethers. The preferred member of this group is the lauryl alcohol polyethylene glycol ether which has about 23 ether units in its structure, commercially available as Laureth 23. This ingredient, when present, constitutes about 0. , 1 to 5 percent,

  preferably about 1 to 3.0 percent of the composition.

  Since the composition is packaged in an aerosol dispenser package, a propellant such as Propellant A-46 (isobutane / propane) is present in a proportion of about 2 to about 4 percent. Other propellants that are not aerosol type include

  hydrocarbons such as butanes.

  The levels of additives and the proportion of soap can be diversified to modify the characteristics of the shaving cream.   An in vitro experiment is performed to assess the deposition of silicone, delivered by a shaving foam, on the skin. As a substrate, full-thickness excised skin of Yucatan dwarf pork is used. Three pieces of pork skin, 6.45 cm 2, are treated with the composition of Example 1, but without the long chain alcohol. Three pieces are treated with the composition of Example 3 containing a dimethicone of 60,000 mm / s; and three were treated with the composition of Example 310 containing dimethicone of 350 mm / sec. A piece of skin is used as an untreated control. The treatment procedure is set up to simulate a real shave operation. A total of five treatments are performed to examine the cumulative effect of a daily shave on the silicone deposit. The treatment procedure is summarized below:

  1. Place the skin in a petri dish.

  2. Weigh about 0.2 g of shaving foam to

each skin sample.

  3. Place 1 or 2 drops of water on the surface of

the skin.

  4. Apply the foam to the skin with a

cotton lette.

  5. Rub the skin with shaving foam during

5 rotations.

  6. Leave the shaving foam on the skin for

1 minute.

  7. Remove the foam from the skin by scraping with

a razor blade.

  8. Rinse the skin 5 times with 5 ml of water at 100 ppm.

  9. Dry the skin in air for 15 minutes.

10. Repeat the operation.

  Skin samples taken by punch biopsy (0.7 cm diameter samples taken from each piece of skin 2 in each pork skin, 6 in total) are analyzed. Analysis results show that Si levels are higher

  on the skin treated with the composition of Example 3.

  The atomic percentage of Si is 0.140 0.04 (Control, Example 1, alcohol free) at 2.8 0.29 and 3.74 1.50 (Example 3). There is no significant difference

  silicone deposition between the foams at 350 and 60,000.

  A small amount of Si (0.143 0.04) is detected in untreated pork skin. This can be a consequence of tanning the skin. Less Si is detected on the skin treated with the alcohol-free composition of Example 1 than on the control. Pig skin is often considered a model of human skin. The silicone deposits, most likely in the form of the silicone present in the composition, correspond to better conditioning properties of the skin.
