Abstract

Liquid cleaner intended for cleaning objects soiled with cured polyurethane foam which is based on 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. The cleaner consists, at least, of one of the following compounds: N,N-dimethylformamide, acetone, tetrahydrofuran and methyl ethyl ketone. The cleaning is performed by rubbing the object after it has been immersed in the cleaner for a certain time (35 to 45 min) [in the case of metal injection guns and small objects], or by vaporising the cleaner onto the cured foam [in the case of large objects]. The cured foam becomes flexible and fragile again, and this permits easy cleaning (cutting off).

Description

The present invention relates to a cleaning product consisting of a mixture of organic chemical compounds.

The purpose of the product is to clean the working utensils of the cured polyurethane foam used as insulation.

In the insulation of buildings, polyurethane is used as an expansive soft foam based on 4,4'-diisocyanatediphenylmethane, which becomes solid, in the open air, after about twenty minutes.

This polyurethane foam is packaged in aerosol cans or in large bottles under high pressure in the form of a very soft paste. It is implemented by injection by means of metal guns. These injectors, after use, are not reusable. Due to the rapid solidification of the foam in the small pipes, it is indeed impossible to eliminate the residual amounts of the material in the tool.

Given the relatively high price of these gun injectors and the absence of an adequate cleaning product on the market, an organic mixture to achieve this objective has been developed. This mixture acts by refluidizing and weakening the hardened foam.

This mixture can be used according to the following discriptions:
1- The cleaning method consists in soaking the tool in a container, with about 500 ml of the cleaner for a given period. The container used is preferably closed to prevent rapid evaporation of the mixture. After the indicated time (see below), the solid polyurethane foam becomes flexible and fragile; it can be easily cleaned by rubbing with a hard brush or spatula, etc.

2- Also, the cleaner can be packaged in aerosol cans for quick cleaning of the tools before complete hardening of the polyurethane foam
3- If the cleaning is packaged in aerosol spray nozzles adapted to injection guns, you can perform a quick cleaning of the pipes in the guns by direct injection of the cleaner.

The cleaning operation should be carried out in a ventilated area to avoid the confinement of organic vapor.

Experiments have been carried out on the polyurethane foam based on 4,4'diisocyanatediphenylmethane, we show the posibility of formulating several mixtures that can meet our requirements.

I C3H7NO)
Acétone (C3H60)
Tétrahydrofuranne (T.H.F.) { C4H8O i
Méthyléthylcétone (M.E.C.) ( C4HsO)
These mixtures were formed from the following pure compounds:
N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) I C3H7NO)
Acetone (C3H60)
Tetrahydrofuran (THF) (C4H8O)
Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEC) (C4H5O)
An attempt has been made to consider the time factor which is, in fact, an important factor in determining the effectiveness of the mixture.

The efficiency is presented here by the time required for the polyurethane foam solidified and treated by our cleaner, is soft and fragile, allowing easy stripping.

The results of our study are presented as follows:
I-The MEK was used in a mixture (DMF + MEC), which gives, for a composition of 50% of MEK, a good effectiveness after 6 minutes of the treatment.

II- The presence of T.H.F. with acetone for the compositions between 25% and 75% by volume of T.H.F., always gives a good efficiency after a period between 35 and 50 minutes.

Figure img00020001
III- The presence of DMF with acetone for the compositions between 20% and 99% by volume of DMF, gives an efficiency higher than that found in I and II.Now presented in the following table the composition of DMF in the mixture and efficiency translated by time:
