Abstract

The wood screw consists of a head (1) with a driving slot (5) and a shaft (2) of a cylindrical form that terminates in a point (3). The periphery of this shaft is provided with a helical thread (4) relatively deep where the flanks of the thread facing the head (1) are practically perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the screw, whilst the flanks on the side facing the point are inclined at an angle of between 30 and 40 degrees to this axis. Use/Advantage - As a wood screw for natural wood or reconstituted synthetic material where the shape of the flanks on the helical thread improves its holding properties even in soft wood.

Description

Screws for all types of natural and reconstituted wood and synthetic materials
The present invention relates to a screw for all types of natural and reconstituted wood and synthetic materials, of the type comprising a head with a driving imprint and a rod of generally cylindrical shape ending in a point, provided on its periphery with a relatively deep helical thread.

Such screws are currently widely used in many fields. They are generally provided with a symmetrical net inclined at an angle of about 20 to 25 both on the head side and on the tip side. However, it has been found that in certain cases, these screws did not have sufficient resistance to tearing, in particular when the support is made of a particularly soft material.

The main object of the present invention is therefore to remedy this drawback and, to do this, it relates to a screw of the aforementioned type which is essentially characterized in that the blank of the thread on the head side is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the screw, while the blank of the thread on the tip side is inclined at an angle between 30 and 40 relative to a plane perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.

In a particular embodiment of the invention, the angle of inclination of the thread on the tip side is equal to approximately 36.

Thanks to this particular asymmetrical shape of the thread, the screw has a very high resistance to tearing, even in the most tender materials. In addition, the greater inclination of the thread on the tip side makes it possible to reduce the tightening torque appreciably, while facilitating the penetration of the screw into the support.

Preferably, the threading continues to the tip, which improves the attack time of the screwing.

A particular embodiment of the invention is described below by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a screw according to the invention
- Figure 2 is a top view of this screw; and
- Figure 3 is a sectional view on a larger scale along the line III-III of Figure 1.

The screw shown in these figures essentially consists of a head i and a rod 2 of generally cylindrical shape ending in a point 3, on which a helical thread 4 of relatively large depth is produced. The head of the screw is here of the milled type and has on its upper face a drive imprint 5 of the cruciform type.

There is a specific marking in the form of +.

Furthermore, a reinforcing cone 6 is provided between the head and the rod in order to facilitate the penetration of the screw into its support when it is desired to drown the head. If necessary, the conical lower surface of the head can be provided with several notches making it possible to mill a counterbore when the support consists of a laminated panel.

According to the invention and as can be seen more clearly in Figure 3, the thread 4 is asymmetrical, unlike screws of this type currently on the market which have a symmetrical thread inclined at an angle of about 20 to 25.

More precisely, the blank 7 of the thread on the head side is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the screw, while the blank 8 of the thread on the tip side is inclined at an angle between 30 and 40, preferably 36, relative to a plane perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.

Thanks to this arrangement, greater resistance to tearing is obtained, while reducing the screwing torque. Indeed, the blank on the head side of the thread, which is perpendicular to the axis of the screw, completely cancels the spreading effect exerted on the support during the tearing effort, which allows resistance to be obtained. increased from 30 to 50% compared to a conventional screw of the same diameter fixed in the same support. On the contrary, the steepest inclination at 36 of the flank of the thread on the tip side very markedly accentuates the spacing effect of the support to be screwed and allows, compared to a conventional screw of the same diameter and in the same support, tightening torques reduced by around 10%.

Note also that in the screw according to the invention, the thread 4 is protruding to the tip 3, unlike conventional screws, which allows to halve the attack time of the screwing and therefore to improve considerably reliability of use.
